So while I was camping, I found a Masonic Lodge (if you want to see it search Masonic Lodge Elkader IA) I left a note with my name and number on it, hoping they'll give me a call.

I'm going to have to pretend to believe in some things to get in, just to see what it's about and all, it seems pretty interesting. And I'm not going to be a jerk and tell you all what the secrets of it are about, if I do get in.

So I was wondering, has anyone here ever been a Freemason? What are the belief requirements, and what do they practice?

You can't just pretend to believe and something and get in. You need 3 sponsors, 3 that can vouch for you.

I never heard that before, Dark, but if so I can care less if I get in.

My grandfather, my girlfriend's grandfather and several of my friends are masons. I'd have joined but simply don't have the time to commit to it.

They've all told me that they would vouch for me if I could find 2 others etc.

I see.

It's better to try I guess, I mean after all I'm in Iowa, this probably isn't a strict Lodge, but I mean, I gave them my number, so if they call I'll talk to them.

Also the age of 18 is required for membership, so it's really unlikely for me to get in in that sense too, but as I said, it's worth a try.

Its not something that varies state to state or country to country. The only reason they will let you inside is if you are taking your vows and to do so you need 3 sponsors.

They can be somewhat flexible on the age thing but its unlikely. My money is that they may call you but you will not get in the door :)

So they finally called, my mom answered and they asked for my name, but my dad and I share the same name so... didn't turn out as expected.

My dad was a Mason, but rarely talked much about it. He never encouraged me to join or to learn much about it, but I know he went to meetings a lot.

Oh that sucks. Why didn't you write (name) Jr or something?

I'd love to join the Masons.

I should've but I hardly put Jr after my name, as it isn't a necessity, since my friends and teachers call me Junior as a nickname so often that it just became a common.

Then to be formal with the letter I put in the Mason door I put my real first name and last, I don't put Jr for formality, because it just doesn't seem formal

Yeah they're not very uncommon, in fact IIRC it was 14 US Presidents that were Masons.

Makes sense.
Can you try again, or would that be too embarassing?

What did they say? :D

I'm not easily embarrassed, but I'm also not easily going to get there :D

So I'm planning on just checking the caller ID on my phone and calling them after my dad leaves for work and talk to them, I know I wont get allowed to join as I'm not 18 yet.

I don't know what they said, my dad just asked about a guy named Al who called from the Masonic Lodge. It's not that he'd care at all if I wanted to join it, it's just that it's such an obscure interest :D

I know some intense magicians who are also Masons.

They usually joined out of curiosity, involvement in related Hermetic brotherhoods, or due to some kind of ancestral connection. But didn't find anything esoterically more compelling than the genuine friendship and brotherhood of some very interesting and entertaining old men, with a wide set of experiences of the world. So I may join them in this, someday. Also I am the owner of my greatgrandfathers 32nd degree Masonic Ring with a diamond in it which he died in the street while wearing after a Masonic ball, but I can't really ever wear it in public as that would indicate I had that rank... so..

Did you know there are two lodges, one in the midwest and one in hawaii, where if you know a lot about Masonic lore and had the $$$ you can take many degrees at once up to 32nd? I met a Satanist who did just that so he could figure what was up with them, but was unimpressed. The real secret is the brotherhood. Also one of them might be able to hook you with a job or something.. Underage guys BTW can join something called the Jacque de Molay society (google him hehe) as pre-Masons. But I spied on their ceremonies one time when they had a convention/retreat at my university where I was employed as a groundskeeper for several summers, and they seemed to be pretty weak sauce.

There were five initial charges lodged against the Templars. The first was the renouncement and spitting on the cross during initiation into the Order. The second was the stripping of the man to be initiated and the thrice kissing of that man by the preceptor on the navel, posteriors and the mouth. The third was telling the neophyte (novice) that unnatural lust was lawful and indulged in commonly. The fourth was that the cord worn by the neophyte day and night was consecrated by wrapping it around an idol in the form of a human head with a great beard, and that this idol was adored in all chapters. The fifth was that the priests of the order did not consecrate the host in celebrating Mass. Subsequently, the charges would be increased and would become, according to the procedures, lists of articles 86 to 127 in which will be added a few other charges, such as the prohibition to priests who do not belong to the order

If you would like to become a Freemason then all you need do is write to your local lodge and pertition to join.
It is not difficult. You simply must be 18 or above, and not act like a ******** when they meet you so noone offers to sponsor you.

I've been to a number of blue lodge Festive boards, my partner and a number of dear friend are regular freemasons.
I belong to an irregular freemasonic Order that encompasses all rites. I say irregular, however there is not such thing as Regular masonary - just many differnt strands who all don't recognise each other, however one that accepts women such as my own, certainly is considered irregular indeed!

Freemasonary is fascinating, I've been studying it for many years now.

If you are into the spirituality of it, be selective when choosing your lodge - many if not most lodges are more about socialising than philosophising these days ;)
