Freud again, and sex

There have been more than one or two threads going in which there has been a mention of Freud - I think the last one is where luke is trying to decide if there is any sexual connotation to the colour green..............

I used to think about his theories a lot. Like all geniuses, he went a bit far, but I believe in a lot of what he said.

My 'understanding' of human life (at 'base instinctual level' ) is that from the moment we reach puberty and the old hormones kick in, our lives are driven by sex - all be it, in a subtle manner.

For the sake of this thread, I will limit it to heterosexuality - simply to reduce the number of variations - but I am sure that this applies to anyone, gender orientation regardless.

As a teenager, both sexes start preening themselves, to make themselves look nice - why? because they want to be attractive to others-why? because they are hoping that somewhere in that melee there will be someone they especially like.

We go to school, learn, take exams, to go to uni...... (If we can, of course) why ? - to get the better jobs why? to earn more money why? to have possessions that will atract others - a flashy car, a nice house...................

Traditionally, this was the boy's 'corner' now things have changed somewhat and girls are far more proactive. We (males) want the best house and car why ? - to attract the best wife (we've gone through education, so we want an intelligent wife; we also want one who is good looking, and healthy, so that we will have 'good' babies.

Traditionally, men have designed ladie's clothes. Appart from the annoyingly crass habit of changing fashions every five minutes, you'll notice that dress lengths change in a way that you gils can't very well alter your clothes to adapt to the new fashion (Ie longer dresses follow the mini skirt, therefore you HAVE to go out and get new clothes, with the matching shoes...etc).

But is the man designing the clothes with the comfort of women in mind ? - I don't think so-from what I see today, with tight low-slung skirts, a lot of girls look as if they have used a ratchet wrench to get into some of their clothes - and unfortunately end up with wads of 'excess flesh' (nicer than fat) - hanging over already waist tight clothes - that can't be comfortable! Shoes, well, of course now all the younger girls are wearing 'sensible' shoes - but for years, you wore high heels - Why ? - to make you look as if you have longer legs-

The point I am making, rather laboriously, is that the bulk of our time in early years is 'geared' to finding the best 'mate' from whom we will have 'intelligent & strong children - and that is sheer nature.

Nature, if you watch animals (other than the human variety) have much the same system - except that with some, it is the male who must look the best, to attract a female.

Oh sure, we are so 'evolved mentally and morally' that we don't really behave in this way - we are so much better than other animals; we talk about morals, ethics, religion - we don't really come down to this sex-driven life of Freud's. Or do we?

Even God seems to want us to behave like this;
Deuteronomy 8:1 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.
Deuteronomy 7:13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
Ezekiel 16:7 I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare.
zekiel 36:11 And I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bring fruit: and I will settle you after your old estates, and will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Genesis 17:2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly

I could go on, but it is just repetition..................

Any one feel that this attitude 'cheapens' us ? or do you agree, and this is nothing new to you? or do you think this is rubbish, and that we are far above beghaviour such as this?:)

The cake is a lie
Maybe I'm just an oddball, but I never really went through the preening stage. The most I do is make sure my hair isn't sticking out and a grease pit. I wear whatever's comfortable and have never really worn jewelry. I do think that such behavior is kind of cheap, though. If you need to make yourself look 'better' to attract someone to you, are they really worth attracting?

Man, I'll bet that the guy who invented the wheel got ALL the chicks!

Then again, it seems to me more likely that it was a woman, given past history...

"Uug, I am sick and tired of hearing you complain about how you have to drag the mammoths back from your hunting trips. Here, use this."

"Uug like."

"Of course you do--its called a wheel."

Back on topic though, I do agree Michel that we are all simply driven by sex when it all comes down to it. Obviously, we're more complex than that, and that is why humans are able to rule over other animals who truly ARE driven completely by sex, but its basically the same thing. Our drive is just more subtle...or hidden. Whichever!
