Front page flooding news

I know there must be some people out there that have heard of the severe flooding in Iowa. That Cedar Rapids is under water. A lot of Des Moines is under water. And there is flooding and storms and tornados wreaking havoc all over our state. I thought I'd post the front page of our paper today just to give an idea of what effect this is happening in my area. (note: water level crest prediction updated to 20.9 this morning)

They've recently started rationing the water out from the reservoir lake just north of us and are increasing the amount released on a daily basis. So much more flooding is expected as the days progress. At this point I am unsure as to whether my home will be affected or not. It is up in the air. Turk and I have been discussing the best methods to save what we can and get out as quickly and safely as possible though in case the worst happens.

I hope everything works out for you... there are loads of natural disasters taking place these days... what gives?

Better reportage, Phasmid.

I hope things stay dry, Draka. Just have everything you want to salvage packed up and be ready to head for the hills at a moment's notice.

They keep increasing the projected river levels and the amount that they are letting out of the lake on a daily basis. Gratefully, from what I heard on the news tonight it appears that the National Gaurd has made the statement that my city is the best prepared city in the state when it comes to these floods. That's quite reassuring really. Volunteers have turned out in great numbers to help with sandbagging and other emergency preparations. Seems we took a lot of lessons learned and sense of community away from the '93 floods.

So far the only ill effects we're seeing at our house for the moment is due to the harsh storms. Storm drains backed up into our basement and flooded it so we have no hot water and it appears that we won't for quite sometime as there is nowhere for the water to go and we can't get to our heater (pilot light below the water line). Part of our roof is leaking as well, but it doesn't appear that dramatically bad at the moment. Nothing a plastic bowl and a towel can't handle right now. Though much more rain might change that.
