To some extent, yes.

I've talked to hundreds of people in dozens of countries about football and anything that creates a common bond helps bring people together.

It's not exactly a panacea for all of humanity's evils though.

Nope, on a local scale it creates tension that can and does lead to aggression between different supporter groups

On an international scale it highlighte national aggression and hatereds

And it disrupts tv scheduing

No.
I like football but hate international football and the World Cup is just corrupt.
Russia bought this tournament...as I'm sure other countries have previously.

It is hyped by TV (Because they've paid frightening amounts for the rights) and pubs, etc.

Roll on the national leagues starting again.

This is a bit specious as most people don't have any animosity for most teams/countries. Something which unites more people than it divides is a net good, even if it is far from perfect.

You are right to some extent of course, but most people only 'hate' a very small number of teams/countries, and even this brings them together with other people.

As a child I remember being on holiday at a campsite in France and watching the final of Euro 92 between Denmark and Germany. Hundreds of people of every European nation united as one to cheer against the Germans :D

I dislike soccer...especially because too many people from my country are obsessed with it.

It surely unites people...I guess.

Marion Bradley once wrote that the only thing sillier than grown men kicking a ball around was other supposed adults sitting in front of the TV watching them.
