Gallop poll on patriotism. Why?

I believe globalization has probably taken a toll. I also believe the words extremely and proud have been getting negative connotations. Had they asked what they thought of america and gave a few options I believe the positive options would still be in the 70% range.

Not a fan of patriotism. It tends to blind people to problems because the comfortable ignorance of '#1' is more appealing than the hard work it takes when you realize we don't, in fact, have it better than a lot of other places across the world.

This is old, and from a TV show, but if it makes one uncomfortable to hear it, good. It a beginning to bringing the issue of confirmation bias for the US to light and shows there's still a lot of work to do.

It is probably the result of telling children a false version of history and then making them feel like America is based upon theft and genocide. Actually it is based upon principles of individual actualization. Immigrants like to come here. Its something to be proud to be part of, provided that we continue to uphold its principles. This is far, far different from blind nationalism and 'Fatherland' disease.

GREAT show by the way. Worth a watch. (The first season is, anyway.)

Yeah too many Libs in America to get too proud..
You can just make stuff up if you want but the reason the decline is due to the current administration. Obama didn't have so many hating their own country.

Polls are just a media tool to guide public opinion. They said Trump would lose. They had a lot of polls trying to convince people that nobody liked Trump, But Trump won, praise the Lord, and Hillary lost, praise the Lord.

Well, their article title certainly is misleading. This, however, isn't:

Essentially, the story that comes out of this is not a "new low" but that patriotism generally rides along a middling line unless there is some sort of giant national tragedy that bands everyone together (the uptick represents the twin tower attacks).

The power of the media to create a narrative.

Story-based strategy approach looks at social change strategy through a narrative lens. The Center for Story-Based Strategy (formerly smartMeme) believes it is about reframing and changing stories in the dominant culture to create more political possibility for social justice movements.

Patriotism is not even a good thing.

A common purpose is. Unless one supports anarchy.

George Orwell, in his influential essay Notes on Nationalism distinguished patriotism from related concept of nationalism:
"By 'patriotism' I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force upon other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power. The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality."

Great!! Patriotism is overrated. If every administration had as much scrutiny as this one does now the state of things would probably be much different. :p

The only thing that concerns me is that the "low point" is still over 50%. :D

A lot has happened since then and now.
Yes, and I think a lot of this is based on the fact that young'uns are not as optimistic about their future as my generation was.

For example, back in the '60's when trying to accumulate money for my undergrad studies, I walked into a Ford plant twice, a GM plant once, and a Chrysler plant once and got a job each time, quitting before my next semester started. Try and do that today.
