Listening to sexually explicit music predicts future sexting behavior among male adolescents

There is a problem in general with men sending unsolicited and unwanted sexts. They don't stop to think about it, but just as it would be exposing themselves if they flashed their private parts in a park, it is every bit as wrong and offensive to send unsolicited penis pics in a text. For some reason, these men think that women want to see their privates. We don't. It's offensive. I'm not talking about when two people have established a relationship and the interest is mutual. I'm talking about out of the blue, unsolicited advances.

I'm not sure what to do about the information in the above study. I mean, what do you do? Start censoring lyrics?

I look forward to reading all your replies.

So what is the problem exactly?

There is a serious problem with men thinking it is okay to simply talk sex to women out of the blue or to expose themselves by sending unsolitied pics of their penis. It is for this reason that a lot of women don't accept PMs from anyone, in order to avoid these jerks.

I see, your study linked sexting though. It didn't appear to qualify whether the sexting was wanted or unwanted.
In my opinion

Perhaps I'm just biased given my history as a mod in a chatroom. I was OFTEN asked by women to help them with men who were sexually harrassing them in PM. I've seen more penises in the last several years than I saw in the previous 60 years of my life. I reached a point where I just couldn't do it anymore.

But sexting is different than chat room stuff. Texting is one on one. With chat rooms, any schmuck can approach anyone and say anything.

So what is the conclusion here? Ban all sexually explicit lyrics and become a sexually repressed people or seek to identify lyrics which contribute to unwanted sexual advances?

Most chatrooms have a PM feature, where you can talk privately one on one. Most of the abuses that mods deal with are things said in PMs, or at least that was my experience.

It's a bit much, I think, to expect an instant solution to the problem, when all the OP is doing is identifying a social issue.

To me, it seems to be another facet of the complicated business of the evolution of modern sexual freedom, facilitated by IT. Speaking as someone nearly 70 years old, I can see two sides to this. On the one hand, it is wonderful to see that young people are now so open about their feelings and desires and seem to have so many fewer hangups than people did in my own youth. (Talking to my son, now at university, is an eye-opener in this respect.) On the other hand, this new freedom does seem (to me) to lead to an undue preoccupation with sex in general, in the media, music etc. It can also lead some people either to misinterpret what is permissible or to exploit the new channels of communication in unpleasant ways.

I could draw a parallel with fake news and false information. On the one hand, the internet democratises knowledge to a previously unimaginabe degree. But also, thanks to the internet, there has never so much crap, accessible so easily, to so many.

I see your point, although I still think it better to help narrow the focus of the OP to those lyrics which are harmful rather than possibly describing all sexually explicit material as "garbage" (not sure if thats what the OP was doing, but all the more reason to seek clarification).
