Georgia High School Shooting

At least two people have been killed and several others injured apparently. I was just thinking yesterday how nice it was that we haven’t heard of any school shootings recently. Sad.

I found a link for it:

What we know so far

  • At least two people were killed and at least four were injured after gunfire erupted today at Apalachee High School in Georgia, according to preliminary information from law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.
  • The suspect is in custody, the Barrow County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
  • All county schools are under a soft lockdown.

Amazing, isn't it? It's so commonplace now, that 9 hours after such an event, almost no discussion about it here. What does that tell us?

More importantly -- what should it tell us?

That nurturing yet another healthy born and raised psychopath is paramount for today's youth.

Kids get gunned down all the time in the inner city and no one cares about that. It literally happens every day all over the country, from babies to teens. My own city is a shooting range in many areas. I grew up with hearing gunshots. This school shooting stuff is very rare and involves mentally disturbed teens and young adults. It's been blown out of proportion by the media, probably because it usually happens in the suburbs and they think "that can't happen here". (There's probably a racial dynamic at play, too, but I'll leave it there.)

Many people care about that but this thread isn’t about that particular problem.

As a teacher in a behavioral health facility I am trained in threat assessment, and that has been a focus of the training: kids are still much safer in schools than on the street.

I think the school shooting problem is so starkly highlighted because of that. When it happens, it's focused on more because schools are the places where children should feel safe and supervised and is a direct contrast to "the street."

But you are right, kids are still safer in schools than other places.

Yeah inner city student deaths have been a thing since the '70s and even earlier than that

The only time it became an issue is when the inner city moved on out into the suburbs, then all of a sudden it becomes a big issue.

It’s still a big issue.
