How is Gnosticism similar and fdifferent to Christianity? How many Gnostics are there? Was Gnosticism an early form of Christianity?

Lev19:18/Mark 12:31
Gnosticism was an early sect of Christianity. They believed in a mystic version of Jesus. As a group the gnostics died out before 500C.E. They thought the God of the Old Testament and the New were different and that an even different God created the perverted world. That all flesh is perverse and the only way to be like Jesus was to find the hidden meaning of the NT. This "hidden" truth showed how to achieve eternal life through a program that emphacized the spirit. There is much more to it but that's the best abstract I could come up with off the top of my head. Hope it's okay.
