It's not the idea of finding purpose in general that I struggle with.
I can get how sonething like writing can give one's life meaning. Creating something that can be an inspiration or object of beauty for others is a service. Writing can make the world a better place.
But service to God would be futile, no? If God is perfect no matter what, then anything you do for God has no effect at all.
What I'm struggling with is the idea of a life's purpose and meaning in the absence of purposeful or meaningful actions to make up that life.
Well, folks like you and I tend to view God as a mythological entity... complete with a book full of dubious commands and dictates.
But you and I still find things like love, family, and (even) writing to be meaningful. Believers find meaning in all that too. I would just say they add the (unnecessary) step of positing that God makes all those things possible. And furthermore, God "blesses" these things... and may even be responsible for bestowing upon someone the gift of excellent writing ability.
If indeed such a being did exist, and those indeed were his intentions... then sure, I can stretch my imagination enough to see how someone might find God (and/or their relationship with him) meaningful. And I wouldn't criticize their assigning meaning to God if that were the case.
I'd be more prone to point out that it is doubtful that such a being exists in the first place.
