That got me thinking. I am generally considered to be a very good employee, at home though I am the biggest slob on the earth. I have never understood it but that is me. Funny things us humans :)
I wonder, if some of this comes down to 'dharma'. Its a word that's kinda hard to translate. 'Personal responsibility' doesn't quite do it... Perhaps the work of being true to one's nature?

We're all given certain skills, and we all lack certain skills. The idea that if everyone does his own work(work, not exclusively employment), to the best of his ability, society will work better on a whole.

No. We have been made to live .

Nothing more, nothing less. Just live. Food is really the only true necessity on this list. Unless you meant "shelter" as opposed to the more traditional sense of the word house.

And I wouldn't consider gathering food to be "work". That sounds more fun to me. Same goes for maintaining a shelter. Those things are fun.
I imagine you as a man who has never done any of those things...

Probably that's how one or both of your parents were.

I think you are wrong there, depending on *when* you are talking about. If we go back far enough in time, finding enough food (read: calories) was THE challenge for survival. IMHO

Regarding the thread title: it is interesting to me that in ancient Sumerian mythology, the gods created man as a slave so the gods could 'rest' from having to work.

I wonder if this was just a way for those in power to make working slaves of their subjects during that time. Can't create (build a sedentary civilization) the world by yourself.

The reason why God created man was to work the ground. After God created the earth, he seen that the plants where not reproducing and he needed a man to till the ground for it to reproduce more plants. Genesis 2: 4,5
