God's right to judge

In especially the Abrahamic faiths, it is usually claimed that humanity has a responsibility to God; certain duties to perform, moral values to abide by, directions in life to take. Heaven, Hell and Judgement Day have always played a large part in these beliefs, and images of people roasting for eternity for committing sins, or having having a host of virgins at your beck and call as a reward for dutiful behaviour, still play a lot on people's minds.

But is it justified for God to reward and punish as He sees fit? Are Heaven and Hell the necessary consequences of your independent actions in the afterlife, or are people deliberately rewarded or punished by God directly for disobedience?

Or more generally: What right does a Creator have over its creations? Does His status allow Him to command obedience on pain of punishment, or does He have to play by certain rules?

I suppose that argument made by most religions: He is the creator and can do whatever He wants and we must obey Him or suffer His wrath.
