Interesting. From what I have been to find out, this is based on siRNA, "short (or small) interfering RNA", which consists of short lengths of RNA designed to stop expression of particular genes in the virus, effectively preventing it from replicating.

The researchers say it is designed to work with all beta coronaviruses, i.e. including not only SARS-CoV-2 but also the original SARS - and perhaps MERS as well, I don't know. It interrupts a gene that is said to be "ultra-conserved", i.e. not easily subject to mutation, so it should work against almost any variant, for years to come.
