Goodbye 2022 and how did I do?

I think a lot of us tend to dwell on our failures and downplay our successes. I know I do. This year for a few weeks leading up to the new year I was fairly obsessing over a couple of things that I meant to get done in 2022 but never got around to.

To take the edge off, I started considering some of the things I actually did manage to get done last year.

That led to my taking a good look at the year in toto and rating things a little more objectively.

In all, I actually did quite a bit better than I was giving myself credit for.

Anyway, here's a list of things I intended to do in 2022 contrasted with things I actually got done:

Get all my dental taken care of:
✅ Six visits to the dentist this year, I'm all caught up.

Exercise:
✅ From February to September of this year I was about as physically active as I could be without hurting myself. For the rest of the year I've been physically active enough not to have given up any of the gains that I made over the first part of the year.

Go back to work for a while:
Fail. I was offered a job this year and I intended to take it, but I procrastinated until the chance wasn't there anymore.

Oh well, that's one for this year.

Get back into fasting:
✅ I had a really good year as far as this goes. I'm a big proponent of fasting and intermittent fasting for a person's overall health but I've been a fairly lackluster adherent for the most part in recent years up until this year. This year I went on at least six (lost count) extended fasts --- anywhere from 36 hours to 6 days --- and I've been practicing intermittent fasting at least haphazardly.

Move to Ojai:
Partail success: Ojai California is a little mountain town above Santa Barbara. For a lot of reasons, living there would make more sense than living where I'm at now.

I've been planning on going up there to check the place out for years now, and this year I finally did, although I'm not ready to move up there yet.

Improve my diet:
Fail. If anything, my diets gotten worse :p although I did manage to cut out sugar to a great extent. My diet isn't bad per se, but it isn't what I'm shooting for either (one more for this year).

Stop spending money on things I don't need:
✅ Did really good here. For a long time I've had what I guess you could call a thrift store/garage sale addiction. I love going to thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales to hunt for "bargins". Inevitably I'll wind up with a lot of stuff that I don't need and will never use. I did very little of that this year. In fact, by my calculations I wasted maybe $30 total, which is a great improvement (and not really a waste since I can probably resell, or re-donate most of it).

I still go to thrift stores and garage sales (it's as much entertainment for me as anything else) but I've gotten into the habit of walking down the aisles, keeping a running tally of everything that I normally would have bought, and walking away patting myself on the back for all the money I just saved. :D

So that's my 2022 checklist.

How about you? How did you fare with your 2022 New Year's resolutions (whether they were actual resolutions or not)?

6 trips to Dentist??

6 = w , which is a symbol for Omega, the title of God and the final hour (The End)...

But 6 times?

Dude, I did a chemical regularly for 5 years and last I went to the dentist, no cavities, which means four years without one, when I had every excuse for hearing it is a nightmare for a dentist to try giving fillings, just pull them...

But I scheduled an appointment recently, they can't get me in until July, so when they take that long, how in the heck does a guy get in 6 times in a year, I mean, yes, possible, but I would think it would require more than a check up, some fillings, a few cleanings, some worse issue...?

I mean, none of my business, you don't have to tell me what for...

But, you're great. Keep the faith, I only badmouth God because I think someone like you would do a better job with omnipotence and omnipresence! ;)

I don't mean to disrespect people who pray to him, many of the best people do, and I do too, and bad people become kind from doing so , a lot...

....but it's more my desire someone be omnipotent who protects innocent people and children, that inspire my blasphemous posts, and what appears like hatred for God.

Heath Ledger's Joker, even if he could have killed batman, he never would,
2LMo.gif
and so I play with God, make fun of him, insult him, mock, but actually don't hate him, (wish he'd lighten up) rather don't like good people suffering, being bullied, injustice, and dying in total agony!

But I do ask WWQD "What would Quagmire do?" :D

I never had any direct resolutions, but leafing through some records and notes I had from the past year, I can see I have nailed that desire to be confident. On the negative side of it, its from being placed in all sorts of situations(and I think that went back into the year before) where it was either step up or get blown down, but I'm pretty damned unshakable now.

My overall energy levels have improved. I'm not totally there, and I think some fatigue this time of year is natural, but a day of feeling tired from waking to sleeping is the exception now, rather than the rule.

But, my diet sucks, too. However, by doing some recording of what I was eating, I can now identify when and why I am having problems with food. Sometimes you have to find the root of the problem before you can do anything about it.

I like the idea of reflecting "how was my previous year", it's useful to see which areas you progressed in alongside your new years resolutions. It sounds like you did really well :)

My pros this last year:

I started putting more focus on being less shy, being more comfortable with who I am and confident. I'd say I've made much progress in this area.

I did work out for 6 months, but I stopped once I moved. So this is a win/lose. Experience points, I guess.

Writing - I made tremendous progress on a novel I'm writing. I did have a couple months where I took a break from it, but I've started getting back into it again and it feels like it's wrapping up pretty good. I still see some flaws in what I've written, but it's getting there.

I bought a house! I'm damn proud of this.

Finding myself - I understand myself a lot better now, and my mind and my emotions. A lot of reading online, introspection, some therapy, a couple books... I can finally say that I love myself, and there is no greater feeling than loving yourself.

My fails this last year:

Dental - Some days I brush my teeth once a day, some days I'll miss for two days in a row. I do have days where I brush twice a day, though. I'd say I don't do bad, but I bet even missing one full day of brushing could probably lead to cavities. I'll let the dentist be my judge.

Spending - I haven't been great at controlling my spending. I'd occasionally buy something expensive. I wouldn't say I don't use it, but I just been sorta careless. I need to be more mindful of it. - Also i need to cut down on eating out so much. Maybe once a week wouldn't be so bad.

My sleep schedule - I've tried to maintain a sleep schedule, but it's difficult. I'd like to start waking up at least at 4 am every morning, that's around the time I need to wake up for work, so it'd be good to be in the habit of it. But that also requires me to go to bed at least by 9 pm every night, that's the hard part.

Improvements for this year:

I plan on working on my assertiveness. I've just started at it, at my job I told someone "I'm sorry, but I need to focus" because I was behind and they were talking to me - which was hard to do because I really like talking to them, but I know it can wait for Break Time. --- I've also been less afraid to ask questions to my boss who has sorta been snarky, but I feel more confident in doing this because I feel I'm putting more of an effort in trying to understand these things.

Working out -- I have bought some dumbbells and a workout bench, and I plan on making a daily routine of this. Waking up early, working out first thing in the morning 6 days a week. PPL training

Finishing my novel -- I've made a lot of progress on it already, it's been 2 years in the making and I feel like it's all coming together. I'm almost positive I'll finish it before the end of this third year.

Major stuff.
Bought a house. Not moved in 30 years so big upheaval. Taking best part of a year to be able to move in (don't ask).
Thought I was happily retired but seems I was mistaken. I got a job as an exam invigilator. Then following on from that I got a job as a teaching assistant. Working full time after being only part time for most of my working life (followed by 6 years of apparent retirement) nearly killed me (a bit melodramatic that) but going to part time from this week. Phew.
Had my second cataract op. Brilliant stuff.
With work commitments my running virtually stopped. Went from being able to run HMs comfortably I can currently shuffle to the end of the street. Knock on effect, my BMI has gone from ideal to borderline overweight. Hopefully will reverse this now I've got my work/life balance back in... er... balance.
Quite a year.

  • Got a new and better therapist
  • Received my first paycheck
  • Expanded my meditation practice
  • Improved my emotional self-sufficiency/ability to be resilient without necessarily having nearby friends
  • Most importantly, I survived another full year and kept pushing.
There's still a lot of room for improvement and achievement, but I'll take any progress I've made so far.

Got a new car for the Mrs.
Maintained contact with my cousin long distance through a difficult year.
Picked up a slight injury at work which I managed.
Got nominated as a fill in for a better role at work.
Got a new phone for a family member (which is a noteworthy achievement given my low wages and that I got it without parental assistance).
Went a whole year without traffic infringements.

How about you? How did you fare with your 2022 New Year's resolutions (whether they were actual resolutions or not)?

I don't have long-term goals, I have short-term ones that I either accomplish or don't in a short period of time. And I don't make all my goals at the beginning of the year, they come and go as the year progresses. I will say though that one of my short-term goals was to become fully independent and not rely on my mom as much as I have been, which has been a resounding success. I'm having groceries delivered to me every month now and I just went off my mom's smartphone plan and jumped to a different carrier. That was actually my goal for a long time, but just before New Year's I actually did it and I feel better about myself already.

Most goals come and go: either I change whatever it is that I was doing or I rethink about it and don't.
