Gov. Whitmer is anti-Catholic?

She is arguing that this was not a mockery of receiving the eucharist on the toungue. Can anyone here honestly believe that, after watching the video? Seems pretty obvious to me. What say you?

I am, reluctantly, voting for Harris. But these 'stunts' by prominent Ds...WTF?? Maybe they are too clueless to understand their offensive behavior?

I don't live in Michigan, so I wouldn't be able to vote for Whitmer anyway. The article had a statement released by Whitmer where she said the photos were misconstrued:

“Over 25 years in public service, I would never do something to denigrate someone’s faith. I’ve used my platform to stand up for people’s right to hold and practice their personal religious beliefs. My team has spoken to the Michigan Catholic Conference. What was supposed to be a video about the importance of the CHIPS Act to Michigan jobs, has been construed as something it was never intended to be, and I apologize for that.”

The governor and Plank were together filming an episode of Plank’s YouTube series, Chip Chat.

I remember when there was that plot to kidnap her which was foiled. Just seemed like a bunch of good old boys, drinking beer and talking politics, decided to concoct some sort of crazy scheme. Never really came of anything, but they did all end up in jail.

Yes, I read what she said when called out. My question is: what do you see that video?

I just saw the picture, not the video. There was a video at the end of the article of an interview with Whitmer. Is that the one you're talking about?

Yes, the video of someone kneeling down before the Gov. taking the 'chip' on the tongue. That is the whole point of contension.

Yes, it may be considered tone deaf and politically inexpedient. I was originally Catholic and raised in that religion at least until my teen years when I started to rebel. I'm not sure if it will change too many votes. At least, in the grand scheme of things politically, this seems like small potatoes.

When a religion inserts itself into secular society, it creates a situation where the religion's trappings get used as a cultural shorthand, including by people who don't consider those trappings to be sacred.

If the Catholic Church doesn't want stuff like this to happen, it can stay out of secular affairs.

Or, those supporting a pluralistic society like Ds claim to be doing, they would not mock something so sacred to part of their constituency?

It is a very questionable visual pun that could also be interpreted as dominance/submission or begging, but by itself it is not bigotry.

I did not see the interviewer kneeling at all during the main video. The picture and video clip that went along with the news story just shows Whitmer feeding her a chip. Frankly, the show itself seems to have a theme of light banter surrounding chips, so I don't see how that could be construed as mockery of the Eucharist. It came off as poking fun at people who love chips more than a comment on religion. What might be offensive to some Catholics is the discussion about abortion, but most Catholics in the US do not seem to be determined to enforce their religious and moral convictions on everyone else. BTW, Protestant religions also have communion ceremonies. So that particular clip did not necessarily have anything to do with a Catholic ceremony.

My only response is "wow."
