Greatest Albums of All Time

I think I can never even decide my own favourite albums without the added hassle of trying to convince everyone else they are 'greater'.

London Calling (Clash), In Utero (Nirvana), The Bends (Radiohead), Master Of Puppets (Metallica), and Pump Up The Vallum (NOFX) are a few records I enjoy after several hundred listens.

I know what you mean; my family laughs at me when I say 'hey this is my favourite' - apparently I said the same about another the previous day.
I would single out Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, Ommadawn,Amarok:-
Amarok

music and lyrics by Mike Oldfield

Last revised: 9 February 1997

  • Hello everyone. I suppose you think that nothing much is happening at the moment. Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha. Well, that's what I want to talk to you all about; endings. Now, endings normally happen at the end. But as we all know, endings are just beginnings. You know, once these things really get started, it's jolly hard to stop them again. However, as we have all come this far, I think, under the circumstances the best solution is that we all just keep going. Let's keep this going in sight, never an ending. Let's remember that this world wants fresh beginnings. I feel here, in this country, and throughout the world, we are crying out for beginnings, beginnings. We never want to hear this word "endings". I know we all want to sit down. I know you want to take it easy. Of course we're looking for the good. Of course we're looking for the fresh start. Isn't that charming? Do you know, I really feel I could dance. Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha... (dancing) Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha... charming... ha-ha-ha... (CRASH!)
But I could add Dire Straits 'The sultans of swing', Joan Baez - well, all her 14 albums that I have.......:)

SUPER NOT-A-MOD
Excluding "best of" compilations, I would say the best album ever was Carole King's "Tapestry." It would have been even better if they had not "enhanced" it with other musicians, and left it as it was in the original demo tape with just Carole's vocals and her piano playing.

THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL
One I first heard Lauryn Hill's debut album, I was floored and it has become a permanent staple in my collection. It has a R&B spiritual quality that is not defined by today's music and I eagerly look foward to her second album.

Macy Gray
On How Life Is

Macy Gray has a unique raspy melodic quality to her voice. Her vocal style answers the question what if Billie Holiday were alive today doing soul and Hip Hop. Great achievments from this album include I TRY, DO SOMETHING, WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL ME?

BOINGO
The group used to be called The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo and then was changed to Oingo Boingo then to just Boingo. This is their last album and a complete departure from their ealier efforts. The album has a great Danny Elfman musical sountrack influence to it and is a fitting but fun tribute to a band that had been playing music for over 25 years.

the "o brother, where art thou?" soundtrack- beautiful, old fashioned american roots music

the "she's the one" soundtrack- done entirely by tom petty, some of his best work

moby's "play"- techno infused with traditional blues, lots of beautiful, weird songs

"chant" by the benedictine monks of santo domingo de silos- great meditation music

...Led Zeppelin II
Boston...
Werd!!:jam: Led Zeppelin I is incredibly dark, but the music & words are powerful.

Boston's second album 'Don't Look Back' was pretty good, but could have been a whole lot better if it hadn't been rushed to completion.

I'd also throw in Boston's Third Stage. Sure, it took forever and a day to come out, but the 'pure' sounds on it are just awesome, and if you crank 'Cool the Engine', it makes other peoples' houses and cars shake. :p

Good music =

Everyone showing their ages :)~

Ok, I will too:
Led Zep 1 & 2,
THE WHITE ALBUM,
whoever said Miseducation of Lauren Hill (spot on and I have to go back and give frubals for that)its a GREAT record,

Operation Mindcrime-Queensryche,
Anything from Old VH,
Joe Satch-Surfin' wit da Alien,
Darkside of da Moonski--Pink Floyd--anyone do the wiz of oz playback with this record!!!!???
but my fav of late is Rage Against the Machines first album, the cover art is a buddhist igniting himself on fire protesting the Vietnam war, and he is as calm as ever, WEIRD STUFF, but the record is unforgetable.
