Greatest Person

My father....

Because he raised me to be who I am... and did so while himself being a man with all the human failings...

"He was a man, all in all.... I shall not look upon his like again"... -- Willie Shakespeare

I know, not what you were looking for....

I would say the greatest historical figure who ever lived was Solon, the father of Athenian democracy... and had the sense when to get out of town....

A man who had power in his hands, and the sense to know when letting go of that power was best for his fellow citizens.

A close second for me is the only Philosopher-King from Plato's ideal that our world has ever seen, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius....

I could never hope to choose one person. However, some contenders are quite high. Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Democritus, Socrates, Hippocrates, Archimedes, Aristotle, Grok (discovered fire!).

All because of their outstanding performance in the fields of Science, Philosophy, Art, Invention and/or Medicine. :jam:

There have been so many great people throughout history. Since I tend to think of "great" as "revolutionary" in regards to history, I'd have to go with Ahkenaten. He transformed an entire empire, spiritually, socially, artistically, and economically. Although many people think that his change of Egypt from polytheism to monotheism was selfish and cruel, I think that the courage and power it took to do so is something to be admired. There are a lot of theories about his connection with figures from the Bible, as well, but I won't get into that. I'll just say that he was revolutionary and should be admired.

The greatest person that I know is my grandfather. Although there are many great figures alive today and throughout history, my grandfather has affected me more than anyone. He's a patient, kind, and loving person, and the stories he tells about his life always make me smile. He's taught me a lot about human decency, faith in yourself, others, and a higher power, and that hard work pays off.

I think...well, there's a huge list of people I think are great, but I'm going to have to go with whoever, way, way, way, way, waaaaay back in history, told the first joke. Kudos to them.

(Hey, jokes are important.)

I think you should break it down into some categories (i.e. Science, Philosophy, Peace, Art, etc.), but I'll try to answer it as you wrote it.

Well - I can't. I can't compare the contributions of men from different walks of life. I have to agree with Druidus. I would add the names of George Washington (refused to be appointed President for Life), Galileo (spoke the truth in the face of the Church), Mahatma Ghandi (took civil disobedience and passive resistance to a whole new level), George Marshall (developed the idea of rebuilding a conquered nation rather than plundering it or leaving it to rot), and George Carlin (I love comedy too).

Aside from Jesus of course, I would have to say Martin Luther King, Socrates, Ghandi, J.R.R. Tolkien (sorry I am a junkie of LOTR)!
