Gun Laws

Do you think crime would go down if gun reform happens in the U.S.? I would like to see reform happen but in all honesty I don’t know if it would reduce crime. Maybe it would idk. I hope it would.

I think some useful regulations would decrease crime
slightly overall, but more so regarding the most news
intensive kind, ie, mass shootings. This is because
red flag laws would disproportionately apply to the
mass shooters.

Kind of depends on what kind of reform we're talking about. Requiring all children over four to carry a handgun and everyone over ten a full auto submachine gun would be gun reform, wouldn't it?
What sort of gun reform did you have in mind?

You want to know if it would reduce crime? Why speculate? Look at the countries that tried it. How did it work for them?

I’m not sure I’m understanding disproportionately applying.

Oh I think I know what you mean, maybe. Lol. Do you think red flag laws would decrease all the mass shootings though?

I think it would. The US is a unique case, though, because we already have hundreds of millions of guns out in public hands. We can’t outright ban firearms for that reason, and on top of that it would go against the second amendment. The icing on the cake is, trying to ban firearms would result in a very brutal Civil War 2.

I think certain firearms should be banned though. Assault rifles in particular. Hunting rifles, fine. Shotguns and handguns, fine. Why do we need assault rifles?

And absolutely emphasize the red flag laws. Increase the standards, make the background checks deeper, etc

Home defense. Since there are already millions of guns out in the streets, it'd be foolish to believe criminals would stop using them. Handguns and shotguns wouldn't do much good in a mass shooting anyways.

I don't think overall crime would go down significantly. As @Revoltingest already said, it may reduce "mass shootings" but you don't need a gun to shoplift, lay a fire or commit fraud.
What would go down are "accidents", suicides and crimes ending in the death of people.
And as @Valjean pointed out, that could be seen in countries which did introduce restrictive gun laws. Especially Australia comes to mind.
But for that to work, it would have to be a federal law. Some states and DC already have stricter regulations. It didn't help much as it is too easy to evade them.

We need to regulate the ownership and use of firearms with the goal of keeping them out of the hands of the people most likely to abuse them. We can't identify all of those people, but we we can identify most of them. They are the drunks, drug addicts, domestic abusers, stalkers, rangers, teenagers, and the otherwise emotionally infantile.

We don't need to ban guns. We need to ban access to them by the people that we know shouldn't have them. And those people usually leave a whole trail of behaviors in their wake that will tell us who they are. We just need to gather that information, and put it to use.

But we also need to raise the responsibility level of all gun owners, too. So they will stop contributing to the problem, and start helping to mitigate it.

I don't know about all crime, but gun reform would certainly cut down on the increase of mass shootings with better
gun regulations. I don't know the statistics but these mass shootings seem to occur in states with no red flag laws.

In addition to access, treating guns more like cars might be useful. Test competence, license, insure, and periodically retest user competence and weapon function.
