Guns, guns laws and mass shootings.

We Never Know

No Slack
Give your thoughts and/or your arguements.

-Gun laws used to be more relaxed than they are now. What has changed from then to now?

-Around 40% of people in the US own guns. Around another 5% live with people who own guns.

Mass shooters make up around 0.00012% of the US population.(that's using 500 as the number of mass shooters)

Mass shooters make up around 0.00029% of the US gun owners.(thats using 500 as the number of mass shooters)

But is "its a gun problem is the only answer"?

Some schools have metal detectors and such and/or have routine searches by police. Never had or needed that when I was in school.
What has changed?

A few questions. I'm sure the first one won't be popular but.....

1. Do you think a person who is confused about who they are or are not sure who they are should own guns?

2. Do you think a person who has been 96'd a few times(at any age)should own guns?
(96'd is committed to a pshyc ward for a 96 hour hold)

3. Do you think a person who tortured animals when they were young should own guns.

4. Do you think a person currently on meds for a mental illness should own guns.

5. Do you think a person who was on mental illness meds/received treatment for a mental illness when they were younger should own guns?

6. Do you think anyone who has committed a violent crime(no matter at what age) should own guns?

My answer is no on all of them. Each one was/is a red flag.

Should minor records and medical records be used in gun background checks?

My answer is yes

I agree with your answers to your questions about gun ownership.

Honestly I think it’s more the overall mentality.
Whilst I’m sure the rest of the world would certainly prefer the states to actually regulate guns properly (that doesn’t mean ban them or stop people from buying them. Have as many as you like. Have them all even. Just be careful of who owns them. That’s all.)

It’s this blanket response I often see whenever this topic comes up in the states. Whereas other countries had a few mass shooting and went. Yeah alright, maybe we shouldn’t give guns out like candy. The states just doubled down and did so again and again. Even Bojack Horseman mocked this stance.
Like you guys just shut down and can’t have a reasonable calm discussion about it. It’s just politics and demonisation and hurt feelings.

I don’t want to see Americans stripped of guns. Have 100,000 rifles if you so desire. That’s fine. I don’t care. But is excising caution really too much to ask?
I don’t ask that as a Democrat, a leftist or a Republican because I don’t know who your politicians even are. I ask as a human being.

People are living in social media bubbles and it warps people's sense of reality. Information overload imo.

Perhaps you could also ask - what happens in other similar countries, and what might we learn from these? But perhaps this is just too easy.

There's a direct correlation between the number of guns available and the number of gun-related deaths-- full stop.

No, but don’t believe that a medical records should be accessed in order to purchase a gun. Whether some medical information triggered being put on a list that was accessible is another story. However, if we did this, I think that such reports should be easily accessible to individuals who may be affected and an appeal process should be open to them.

I am not a fan of stripping rights from people. I do believe that individuals have a right to privacy. Purchasing a gun doesn’t forfeit that right.

I think American homicide and suicide rates indicate much larger and more complex problems that “guns.” I think the solution is addressing these problems. I think doing so is going to be very expensive. Look at how the U.S. responded to Obamacare? I don’t think that US will accept or implement the reforms necessary to address the issues, despite the fact that the issues may be addressed without any legislation on guns.

Mental health evaluations are never perfect. Even trained psychologists can be manipulated or lied to. Are you going to have the top notch psychologist check over every single individual who has a gun?

The guns we really need to get rid of are the ones that have more power and ammo than necessary. And I think that’s what’s different between now and then, did as many people back when you were a kid own assault rifles? The norm was usually shotguns, hunting rifles, and pistols, no?
