I'm sorry for you both. 
I have people I have to let go quite regularly, and it is sad when they do their best. It's just that some aren't cut out for this line of work and can't perform as needed.
Here, have some guilt: mehehehehe
It's all part of the hiring and firing cycle and comes with the job. Even when firing is easy because it's deserved it is still not pleasant
