When I moved to Chicago in the early 1980s there were many shops in and around my neighborhood that kept live chickens, ducks, geese, etc. that they would butcher for you. Many ethnic communities in the city preferred this: Chinese, Mexicans, Puerto-Recans, ...
The city did eventually ban them from keeping of live animals, though they allowed it regarding sea creatures for some reason.
When I lived in Richmond Va. prior to that, some of the poorer folks in my neighborhood kept live chickens. I could hear the roosters calling often throughout the day. I don't know if they were legal to keep, but I do know no officials ever came around to stop it.
I have killed and eaten squirrels, turkeys, pheasants, ducks, rabbits, and deer. And so have a lot of other white-faced red-blooded birth-certified Americans. My New York friends used to see homeless guys trying to catch and kill the pigeons there to eat. So I think a lot of this trumped up outrage about Haitians supposedly eating people's pets is quite disingenuous.
