Halloween – Harmless or Harmful Fun? - The Review of Religions

The origin of Halloween is from the Celtic festival of death marking the beginning of their New Year, called ‘Samhain’, pronounced sow-en or saw-win, celebrated on 31st October or 1st November.

‘From the earliest records, Samhain is seen not simply as a day for the dead but when the dead might reach out to the living.’2

This came to be known as the feast of the dead, because the Celts believe that on this night the veil or border between the worlds of the living and dead is the thinnest, enabling souls of the dead to re-enter the world. This was a time when the Celts anticipated communing with the dead spirits, in the hope that their dead ancestors would guide them about the forthcoming new year.

On this day ‘…the spirits of the dead left their graves and roamed the earth or visited their former homes and families.’

"The Review of Religions, in print since 1902, is one of the longest-running comparative religious magazines.

The objective of the magazine is to present the teachings of Islam, reflecting its rational, harmonious and inspiring nature. It also brings together articles and viewpoints on different religions and seeks to make discussions on religion and religious philosophy accessible to a wider readership.

The magazine is devoted to promoting intellectual and lively debate that is based on respect for all prophets and religions. Islam repeatedly stresses the need to seek knowledge and The Review of Religions provides a unique platform for people to acquire, and share knowledge.

The Review of Religions is an international magazine that is published by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community – a global organisation dedicated to promoting interfaith understanding."

Halloween - Harmless or Harmful Fun?

Harmless fun with roots in ancient pre-Christian traditions.

According to the Oxford Dictionary of English folk lore: "Certainly Samhain was a time for festive gatherings, and medieval Irish texts and later Irish, Welsh, and Scottish folklore use it as a setting for supernatural encounters, but there is no evidence that it was connected with the dead in pre-Christian times, or that pagan religious ceremonies were held."

Why do overly pietistic religious groups always have to make things out to be more evil than they really are -- like alcohol, cards, dancing, movies, Halloween, sex, etc?

Samhain also has seasonal significance.

It mark the new year day on the Celtic calendar, as well as to indicate the start of winter. Samhain is not about "good and evil".

Halloween is harmless celebration for both adults and children, unless someone deranged spoiling the night celebration.

it is also a major satanic ritual day. It’s a religious holiday for the underworld, with satanists performing sacrifices and witches celebrating with prayer circles. When the druids celebrated halloween, they roamed the streets with lanterns, and on coming to a house, they demanded money as an offering for Satan.

its funny how we think we are so different to the people who lived so long before us ....same pagan rituals, different time and place.

The (historic) Druids weren't Satanists...:foot:

I don't see much harm in it. People get to dress-up, kids go trick-or-treating, adults go party, people use their imagination, and everyone has a good time. It's also good for the American economy with so much candy being produced and bought, so at least during this holiday of indulgence there are some economic benefits, even if temporary.

That is simply wrong. Druids did not (and still don't) believe in Satan, and why would anyone make a monetary sacrifice?

Druids didn't believe in Satan, much less take collections for him.

It's harmful. Very harmful. There was this one time, when this one guy opened this portal at midnight on Halloween by chanting thirty Hail Mary's in the dark in front of a mirror, and he released a ghoul of revenge. I kid you not, it was terrifying. And then, my friend, Beth Ann, was all, "YOU DID NOT", and I was like, YES HE DID".

Tomorrow at church we are celebrating the Day of the Dead with the high school students in Sunday School.

Complete with sugar skulls.
