Hampshire College: Removal of US Flag

School spokesman John Courtmanche told CNN:

"Our goal is to give voice to the range of viewpoints on campus across cultures, and hopefully find common ground," Courtmanche said in a statement. "We've heard from members of our community that, for them and for many in our country, the flag is a powerful symbol of fear they've felt all their lives because they grew up as people of color, never feeling safe."

Members of the community view the US flag as a symbol of fear? WTF? You live here in the USA for crying out loud. It is the flag of this nation. If you don't like it, then leave. If you want true fear, try living in an area that is subject to being bombed by rebels, or taken over by ISIS.

If you come here, you do so knowing that is our flag, English is the prime language, we drive on the right, don't use the metric system, and a McDonald's is on every other corner.

Give me a break.

Who says they're immigrants?

This country's flag flies as a corporate symbol
This country's flag strikes hearts with fear-COLD FEAR!
This country's flag represents oil interests
The president wages an endless war so he can,
Justify stealing ****ing billions
Steal the public's rights through the use of fear, use of fear...
That is a system I can not endorse

What's next? "I'm offended by those red brick buildings since red is the color of the blood shed by slaves around the world who used to have to make bricks. Bricks support slavery because a long time ago some slaves somewhere had to make lots of bricks! Haven't you ever seen the Ten Commandments movie?! It's an outrage! Tear them down!!"

Please. Our national flag is not a symbol of racism. A symbol of bureaucracy, power, the man, sure, but not racism. It's one things to dislike the system America has created for itself and another to claim that a piece of fabric is making you afraid because you're black. Get off the victim wagon and start putting all that energy towards something that's actually harming someone, like, oh, I don't know, global poverty and medical need or human trafficking and human rights.

Then by all means lets help get these people that feel this way out of the country to say Cuba, or North Korea or somewhere more to their liking. The dirtbags.

The present curriculum
I put my fist in 'em
Eurocentric every last one of 'em
See right through the red, white and blue disguise
With lecture I puncture the structure of lies
Installed in our minds and attempting
To hold us back
We've got to take it back

As far as the rebellion thing goes, it's one thing to protest the system and rebel against something, it's another to whine because you feel offended. I love RATM as much as the next guy but there is such a distinction between the messages of a corrupt system and today's kids complaining that things aren't fair and they have their feelings hurt. There's also a big difference between the students going out and doing something themselves (a public flag burning perhaps?) and them bullying the administration into sticking its tail between its legs and taking the pity walk of shame in the name of the most high and mighty Safe Space.

well said, but in a sense I think it's good, what these liberal colleges/ people/ media are doing during/since the election; exposing themselves for how disconnected and marginalized they have become from the the rest of America, from reality, better they throw off that thin veil of 'open mindedness' and expose the real ideology underneath

Even then you're still wrong. It wasn't the Confederate flag flying over Government property all the way up the 1950s when black folks were enduring segregation.
It wasn't the Confederate flag flying over a nation that committed physical & cultural genocide against the First Nations and discriminated against them by preventing First Nations folk from a) practising their cultural belief systems b) being recognised as U.S. citizens up until the 1960s.

The Star-Spangled Banner is a symbol of racism to some as much as the Swastika or the Rising Sun.

More of an example that a flag is more than just a flag. And, according to the article, there was no bullying but an actual conversation over it. It's also just not the American flag, but they are not flying any nation's flag. And within the same sentence that states "we've heard from members of the community...the flag is a powerful symbol of fear...for others, it's the highest aspirations."
There's definitely more going on than the OP mentioned.

This is silly. The college is clearly misguided and has no idea what they are doing.

The US is an aggressive, rapacious empire that's been riding roughshod over the rest of the world almost since it's inception. It's history is one of endless wars and suppression in the interests of American corporate hegemony.
Why should we take pride in such a country? It violates it's very founding ethos.

It's a terrible sad irony that America fought to be free from the Colonial rule on England, only to set itself up as a dominant colonial/imperial force shortly after.

Blame the Japanese. The US was not a powerhouse prior to WWII, and even tried to stay out of the war. Once Pearl Harbor happened, the US went into a** kicking mode and has never looked back.

I am pretty sure we baited the Japanese into attacking. But that is a historical story for another day.

America was sending in the military to suppress other nations, typically for economic purposes, long before WWII. The Banana Wars alone lasted a few decades and was done before WWII.
