Happiness & Habits

I have often written that, “Happiness is doing what you want to do and not doing what you do not want to do”, and thinking on this statement (as I’m often prone to do), I thought it would be an interesting exercise to apply this to the tradition of the New Years Resolution. Actually, I have thought about making this kind of a monthly resolution at that.

You know, most of our beliefs and behaviors, if not our knowledge and understanding, are habits. We become accustomed to acting in this way or that and we become accustomed to believing in this way or that. Thus, bad habits are those customs of ours, in thought or in behavior, that do not reflect the aims of our happiness. That is to say, bad habits are those habits we wish we did not have or are those contradictory to the habits we desire.

So, for our New Years Resolutions (or monthly if we prefer), why not reflect upon those things we want to do, but do not, and the things we do not want to do, but do. Then, pick one for January. Choose to do one thing you want to do, but are in a habit of not doing, or to stop doing something your do not enjoy, but have become accustomed to. Then, if after a month you have become habituated to the behavior, reflect on whether or not you are the happier for it. If you are happier, choose another habit to adopt or discard, and so on.

If you can think of some, what are some habits you would like to adopt? What are some habits you would like to discard?

Actually, to address your first statement, psychologically, it is believed that you can only achieve hapiness by doing those things you need to do, before those things you wish to do.

Yeah, but do you know anyone without food, water or shelter. I'm assuming everyone here has all those things.
