Yep, it was on this date back in 1945 that the first atomic bomb was detonated in New Mexico.

The atomic bomb is 77 years old today. It's only been used twice, but its existence has forever changed the geopolitical landscape.

Don't forget that the bombs that were actually used (and the original test bomb) would be considered very small by today's standards. Most nukes in arsenals are hydrogen bombs, not atomic bombs.

Little Man's name came from its designed being based on Thin Man. Fat Man, due to it being rounder, was named after a character from the Maltese Falcon.
