Makar Sankranti is four days festivity period starting tomorrow in the USA which is dedicated to Lord Sun. All rituals during Makar Sankranti are gestures of thanksgiving to natural resources which make life possible on the Earth. The Sun God is worshipped for bestowing good harvest and nurturing livestock.

It is also the time of the Uttarayan Makar Sankranti Indian Kite Festival!

23 days out of sync with Winter solstice. That means some 1633 years, around 384 AD, Gupta Dynasty in Central India, Samudragupta, son of Chandragupta I (not Chandragupta II also known a Vikramaditya). somewhere around Aryabhatta's time.

Of course, no non-vegetarian food till Jan. 16 - Purnima, Satyanarayan Vrata, Makar Sankranti, Sankat Chaturthi, etc. Will prepare sweets laddoos with sesame, ground nuts.

Happy Makar Sankranti!

Hope the spirit of the festival pervades India and the whole world as we need to have greater appreciation of the natural resources of the earth .

As an insightful saying of Gandhi goes, " Earth has enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed."

I remember growing up in a farm in southern India where this festival was celebrated as Pongal with much fervor and enthusiasm , it marks the reaping of crops and a special thanksgiving to God .Part of the celebration was the boiling of the first rice of the season offered as an appreciation to the Sun God for providing the energy for agriculture. The crop produced after a long sweat and toil is brought home and celebration is in the air.

This day coincides with Makara Shankaranti celebrated in other parts of India.
“Sankaranti is a Sanskrit word meaning, transition. Makara Shankaranti denotes the transition of Sun from Sagittarius (Dhanu rashi) into Capricorn ( Makara rashi ).
Shankaranti and Shankar sound similar to me , do they indicate towards a similar meaning ?

I am missing Thai Pongal this year, but my friends back home will surely be bearing the frigid temperatures at the temple doors to boil the pongal.

Had a bath, wore washed clothes, wore the 'yajnopavita' on the left side, paid my respects to my ancestors, donated money in their memory, then had my breakfast. My wife ensures that I follow the rules. Nice girl.

No I am not sorry , I am thankful learned SirJi .:) Do you have the root word?

Thanks , I get the meaning of Krama , so Sankranti is from Sankrama which is combination of Sam + Krama. Right ?
Now what is the meaning of Sam ?

Searching for the meaning of Shankar or Sankar on Web I found this meaning.
Sankara is a combination of two words Sam+ kara , sam meaning good and kara meaning doer
Sam also means state of same ness harmony or rhythm.
What Shankara Means?

So I think the similarity between the two is the presence of Sam in both .
Correct me if I am wrong .

Hindus realised a long time ago the value of natural resources and a good harvest in agriculture and so it was appropriate to celebrate this through Makar Sankranti.
