Hare Krishna Mantra

Where has the mantra "hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare" originated from? Is it from after the hare krsna movement or from before? How come I never hear others (non-hare krishnas) chanting it? Is it only allowed to be chanted by them?

I believe it came from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu over 500 years ago. That is where Gaudiya Vaishnavism sprouted from and why they are the ones we hear chanting this mantra.

The mantra came from one of the Upanishads (can't remember which one), but in there, it was switched:

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

I actually tend to be more Shaivite than Vaishnavite, but I still like singing the mantra now and then.

There are so many mantras each sect has their own that they put emphasis on repeat. Still you will find many Hindus willing to chant that Mantra.

Kali Santarana Upanishad.

"The Muppet Movie"

About 2 to 3 minutes in, Dom Deluis lost in a bayou,
while rowing a boat, asks a frog he sees who is palying a yukalele or banjo:
"Help, I'm disoriented . . . "
to which Kermit, the frog replies, "Have you tried Hare Krishna?"

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
To this day, I have never heard any public nor private acknowledgement of this scene at the beginning of the original "Muppet Movie".

There is a conspiracy going on I tell ya!
There is a conspiracy!

Oh tell the world our story!

Hmmm, I'm a non-Vaishnava, so I'm most definitely not an ISCKON member. I lean more towards Shakta, but with a slight helping of Shaiva. I recite the Hare Krishna mantra every now and then.

The Hare Krishna mantra, in my opinion, can be chanted by everybody who wants to chant it. I can't see any problems if someone wishes to, whether they are non-Vaishnavas, or even non-Hindus. I don't see Hindus as really minding if you (or anyone else) chants the Maha-mantra and don't consider yourself a Hindu (although I don't know if you do don't)--I think many will be pleasantly surprised by it.

Just thought I would offer my two cents. :)

Oh, and Muppets. Awesome. :D

Do I have the honor here of mentioning to you, for the first time, that George Harrison, of the Beatles, had wriiten the song "My Sweet Lord" ---that features the Hare Krishna Mantra sung in the Background accompaniment? He sings Vishnu's name and similar Vaisnava stuff at the end of the song.

I am still waiting to find out if Russell Brand had the mantra sung at his wedding.
