Has it really come to this?

Third party candidates will become more viable when more people break the whole "I have to vote for the lesser of two evils" mindset.

Yes. I mean, I can vote for the Green party but right now that would just be wasting my vote. Most Americans are sheep and just can't think outside the current system. So who would be 'less bad' for the biosphere? Kamala.

Imagine if everyone “wasted” their vote and voted third party ;) but that’s beyond the scope of this thread so that’s all I’ll add with my interjection.

When the government asks for people to turn in their neighbours, it's generally to "investigate" them.

MAGA Republican officials - namely De Santis - has already shown that he'll use information at his disposal to "investigate" average voters who he sees as political opponents.
Hmm.

Do you think this kind of action would be normalized under a Trump administration (troopers knocking on your door asking if you signed a petition) (or other scary stuff like that)?

Trump himself certainly seems to me promising that it will be.
Now I want to frame the question about Trump supporters.

Do people suppose that Trump supporters would accept this? They are supposed to be freedom loving patriots who have their second amendment rights for a reason. I guess that many Trump supporters did storm the capitol on Jan 6th though…

So let me once again rephrase the question. Would Trump supporters you banter with here on RF would “turn you in”? I’d like to think not, even if Trump and a subset of supporters would perhaps. I’d like to think we are all on the same side here on this board. We are here for the spirit and love of discussion and debate, and can agree to disagree. Have we lost that on this board?

It doesn't take everybody, but yes experience from the last century says that is not a necessarily ignorable or even outrageous possibility. Banter such as appears here would have been considered impossible behind the "Iron curtain" for my cousins that lived there. It would take a while until any posts even questioning the government would get one locked up here, but it is already the reality in many places in the world.

The issue is that Trump supporters do not see their denigration and persecution of others as the bellwethers of this sort of situation as has happened all too many times already and happens today in authoritarian societies.

Trump supporters are exactly the type of people that make this sort of thing a danger. Rationality is not involved, only the sense that we need to protect ourselves from "the others" be it Jews, Liberals, Communists, Socialists or whatever they wish to define however poorly as an enemy.

And sorry, a desire for anarchy will not save you as you are just another group that objects to their control structure.

In his last term, Trump normalized federal secret police who would grab people protesting him off the street, throw them into unmarked vans, and detain them without trial.

I was going to say that Trump will use any tactic against opponents that he thinks he can get away with, but that's not quite it: Trump will use any tactic against opponents, period, and people around Trump will suggest any tactic that they think they can get away with if Trump uses it.

For me, I see a Trump(like) presidency/dictatorship as the inevitable conclusion to any government/democracy. So for that reason I won’t vote for Harris, even if I can be convinced that Trump would expedite fascism in America. Does that make sense?

But we got too many guns in circulation for fascist government to happen…

You could have 10 times that number of guns, you are still not going to defeat the U.S. military. The U.S. spends more on the miliary than the next 9 countries combined.

You think a bunch of morons in militias would stand a chance? No, the fact that they have a lot of guns just means a lot of people will die. But it won't change the outcome.

That is assuming the military doesn't fall in behind the god appointed genius.

The US military is good at attacking and invading, but they are crap at ruling or installing a friendly government. A junta would fail miserably in the US.
