Hearing Voices - How do you interpret this experience?

Before I start talking about this, I wanted to let everyone know that I am safe and I'm not in a crisis of any kind right now. I have been experiencing this phenomenon for a very long time, since early in the 2000s, and even to some extent before that. Although I don't enjoy it, I am able to live with it. So this is *not* a 'please help me' or 'call the cops' type of thread.

How does the phenomenon of hearing voices fit into your personal experience of religion? Do you meditate and talk to other voices in your head that answer you and give you knowledge, information, and perspectives on things that you could not have known by yourself? I have heard and read of many, many different people talking to voices in their heads and interpreting it as a religious experience. It is extremely common. In fact, there was an attempt to start the 'Hearing Voices Movement,' a group of people advocating that it wasn't all that unusual, abnormal, or sick to hear voices. (It's on Google, of course.) Many people are calling themselves 'Indigo' and interpreting these things as a psychic ability.

I have been having discussions with voices in my head for a very long time, but in the beginning, it seemed to be benign. In about 2003, a series of events happened which led to the voices and attacks becoming much worse and no longer benign.

I started researching radio frequency weapons and other methods of putting voices into people's heads, and my interpretation of my experience is that I am being attacked by real, physical, living human beings on planet earth who are talking to me by using electronic weapons.

However, many religious people say prayers and talk to God or their various forms of gods, depending on what religion they have, and it is benign or helpful to them, not an attack. They also might have attacks and interpret it as being caused by demons, evil entities, or some other supernatural creatures.

I am an atheist, and I have a naturalistic interpretation of the universe: everything that happens has some natural cause which can potentially be understood, in principle, although in reality we can't possibly trace the causes of every single event that happens in the universe. Even if there were psychic entities flying around, we would, theoretically, be able to research them scientifically.

What is your relationship with the entities that interact with you? Do you take their advice, do you see them as wise and benevolent and helpful, do you see them as giving you meaningless noise and gibberish, do you see them as harmful and controlling or violent and abusive?

I don't know about many different religions, but I remember reading about gnosticism. If I recall correctly, the gnostics felt that even if God did exist, he might be more of an enemy than a friend. If an all-powerful being is controlling everything, then that being has the power to totally destroy you, and you are his slave. Not everyone wants to be enslaved to an all-powerful entity. That is how I feel about the 'entities' that are interacting with me.

And yet, sometimes, they are benevolent to me. I have had many interesting conversations and discussions with them. They have convinced me of things which I probably would not have realized on my own.

Many, many people interact with voices and other entities in their minds, and everyone interprets it differently. I chose one interpretation: humans with electronic weapons. Other people have chosen other interpretations. Even though I interpret the voices as coming from humans, I am interacting with them in a way that resembles many people's experiences of prayer, and the interactions are not always evil and harmful - they are often benign.

If I could get rid of the voices, I would. I would prefer to have free will. In the future when I get my life more settled, I will research how the attacks are being done, and I will research ways to shield myself against them. I will find out whether there are places on earth where I don't hear voices anymore. For now, I have to postpone that project.

If you talk to voices in your head, have you ever felt that you wished they weren't there bothering you and telling you what to do? Do they ever do anything that you experience as negative?

For me, the key was to completely stop using all drugs. I still drink caffeine, for now, although I'll be quitting that again too - I've quit caffeine for long periods of time in the past. But psychiatric drugs like antidepressants can make you go crazy and can make you hear the voices in your head even more clearly, and can make you much more disturbed and distressed by them. Now that I am drug-free, the voices and attacks are much more benign again.

i dont want to put a mental illness on it, but that is what it could be. Schizophrenia is a condition in which voices are heard, and they can even be seen.

If it turns out not to be schizophrenia, then my next point of call would be demons. Sorry, i know you said you dont believe in them, but i do and they can and do interact with mankind.
One way to test this theory is to look around your house and see if you possess anything with a connection to the occult. It might be a trinket from a person who practices divination/astrology/witchcraft etc or it might be something that you keep which is directly connected to the occult. Those sorts of things can act as a medium.
If they are demons, then there is only one way to get them out of your life... but you should see a psychologist first and find out if you have a mental illness.

all the best.

(I'm a she, not a he.) I don't have a piano at the moment, but out of curiosity, is there some spell that involves playing the piano? Or is the piano the medium through which the demons are being conveyed to me? With all the awful music I hear on the radio, I'd be inclined to say that the radio was a medium through which demons are conveyed. I do feel that good music connects me directly to my spirit and in that way it's like a magic spell to me.

Eh, communing directly with the gods or various otherworldly entities is kind of normal in contemporary Paganism. But it isn't typically described as "hearing voices." That has cultural connotations that are... not so good at conveying what is going on from a religious standpoint. It's something that is a major part of my path, and has been a major part of my life since before I identified as Neopagan. That Neopaganism is so accepting of these kinds of mystical experiences was not a small contributing factor to my decision to follow that path.

What you're experiencing, Longhair, seems... somewhat different from that though. I Have never felt "enslaved" by my work with otherworldly aspects of reality. That and the theory about being attacked with humans living on this plane of reality with electronic warfare makes me lean "schizophrenia" rather than "religious/mystical experiences."

Yes, I'm aware that most people view this as schizophrenia. Part of the point that I'm making is that if someone interprets it as a positive experience, then it's okay, but if for some reason they interpret it as a negative experience, it gets labeled as schizophrenia. I'm saying it might be the same thing, but with a different label and a different interpretation put on it. For all anyone knows, I could be communicating with gods and demons too, and I'm just, for whatever reason, too cynical to believe that that's what I'm doing. Maybe I'm just misinterpreting my own experience, for all anyone knows.

I am glad to hear that you found a place where you felt accepted. I like knowing that there are groups of people who accept a wide variety of mental phenomena as being mystical experiences. The words that people use to describe what they're doing definitely can have negative connotations or positive connotations.

I've heard other people mention 'spirit guides,' for instance, Lady Gaga. I actually do a lot of the same things that these people are doing - talk to the voices, get input and feedback from them - I just don't describe them as spirit guides, and my experiences with them are not always positive.

The term "spirit guide" is used often in some metaphysical (particularly New Age) circles, but I tend not to favor it either. It's not a good way of describing my relationships to various denizens of the otherworlds.

I'm not sure if the difference in schizophrenia diagnosis has to do with interpretation being positive or negative. There are some relatively standardized clinical definitions for the condition and a true diagnosis can only be done by a professional. Mental illnesses are typically only diagnosed where the condition inhibits normal functioning. I suppose negative interpretations might lead to that more often, but not necessarily.

Music is always.magical. to be honest the piano thing is a joke and a reference to the ghost busters. I like to use humor in my craft. I adapted a spell on the fly once when doing s banishment for a friend.always.wanted to reenact that sceen hahaha. Better then tring to leave the flower still standing.

In regards to voice they are my own voice.

Also sorry for the gender mix up.

Since you already got the schizophrenia suggestions, and it's your prerogative to get that double checked, I'm going to add if you still think you are in access to preternatural forces (men from mars, secret weapons, etc) keep a notebook and write down whatever you think the voices are telling you so you can keep an honest track record of hits and misses to really evaluate if this info is stuff you wouldn't normally know about, or self-fulfilled prophecies and hindsight evaluations. Whatever you hear, don't listen to anything that will harm you or anyone else. Once you get that message, call a shrink.
