Heaven's Gate

In my religion class today, my teacher brefly mentioned Heaven's Gate. I know it was an internet thing that happened but I do not know much else about the subject, and I would love to know what it was all about.

I am asking here on RF rather than just looking on the internet because it is easier to see many different points of view about the topic when people post their thoughts.

Friend oogagoogaboo,

Heaven's Gate

Personally have always been in heaven and as far as have been to never found any gate though find people shying away from getting in due to the mental barriers.

In that case here is what wiki has:

eaven's Gate members believed that the planet Earth was about to be recycled (wiped clean, renewed, refurbished and rejuvenated), and that the only chance to survive was to leave it immediately. While the group was formally against suicide, they defined "suicide" in their own context to mean "to turn against the Next Level when it is being offered",[4] and believed that their "human" bodies were only vessels meant to help them on their journey.
The group believed in several paths for a person to leave the Earth and survive before the "recycling", one of which was hating this world strongly enough: "It is also possible that part of our test of faith is our hating this world, even our flesh body, to the extent to be willing to leave it without any proof of the Next Level's existence".
The members of the group added "-ody" to the first names they adopted in lieu of their original given names, which defines "children of the Next Level." This is mentioned in Applewhite's final video, "Do's Final Exit," that was filmed on March 19, 1997, just days prior to the suicides.

From my personal memory, they thought that the Hale Bop comet was a mother ship that was going to take them away. They all had matching jogging shoes and jogging suits. They assisted each other in a mass suicide right before the comet passed. They all carried exact change, in quarters, to pay their way on the ship. Most of the men had been castrated. They left behind videos and there were no signs of a struggle. It is believed they all died willingly.

Apparently their original website is still up.

Ah i see thank you for that
Any time! Let me know if I can help more. I didn't follow them or anything but I do remember all the hype on the television when it all had taken place. I remember a classmate in college telling me that is probably going to be the single weirdest thing we see in our lifetime. I think he may be right.

I am a HEAVEN'S GATE sympathizer and have studied the group teaching for many years now.
I have published a memorial book for them titled, HEAVEN'S GATE A MEMORIAL Established 2009. If you Google it, or GRYODY you will find many links. It tells the story of what could have happend if the members had borded the space craft and traveled the galaxies. It includes a written memorial for the group along with my personal spiritual journey and how I came to know Christ through Bible truth and why I had such a spiritual connection with their beliefs. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email

I would suggest you seek psychiatric counselling as soon as possible.

No. The videos they showered were them pretty much telling their story. The medical examiners did say there were no signs of struggle in the suicides though. Many of them assisted each other, like holding a pillow over someone else's face and stuff like that. It wasn't your typical poison in the kool-aid type cult. I do remember something about most men having been castrated so they could focus on the task easier or something like that. The women in the videos all had short haircuts that didn't even look good either. It kind of looked like they tried to give themselves a haircut in the bathroom mirror. What baffled me above all was the fare money they all carried, in quarters. If they were leaving their bodies behind (they called their bodies "vehicles" by the way) then how were the quarters going to follow them to the mother ship?

I remember when I first heard about this. I thought it was a joke, and I actually thought it was funny as hell until I was told it was real. Became that much funnier.

I mean i guess in a sort of twisted sense its funny, but at thhe same time its kinda scary to think that people will follow others into that kind of stuff...
