Help Needed! Bringing Back the Old Rating Options

Hi, all!

I'm going to start working with @sun rise on bringing back the old rating options, but I found out that the ratings we had in the previous software were apparently from a plug-in made by an individual XenForo user:

This means we most likely can't reuse the same rating icons without infringing on a copyright, so here's what I need help with: I need to find copyright-free icons to use for this. We will need 32 x 32 and 64 x 64 versions thereof, so a white or blank background and square dimensions would be perfect. It's okay if we find bigger icons and resize them; they just need to have a white or blank background.

I tried generating some using AI and got decent results, but DALL-E is unavailable in my country, and I suspect I could get better results with it.

These are the ratings for which we need icons:

Winner
Informative
Useful
Friendly
Funny
Optimistic
Creative

Thanks for the help! This is a task led by the volunteer staff and one member (@sun rise) so far, so I will be very happy if we pull it off all on our own.

How about one for "inaccurate"?

For creativity, what about this public domain SVG of a lit lightbulb? It seems to work well enough at 32 and 64 pixels.

But I think I like these two better.

For usefulness, there is a wrench svg (also in the public domain) at File:Preferences-system.svg - Wikimedia Commons

There is a variety of hopefully suitable icons for "information" shown with the request Search media - Wikimedia Commons

For winner icons, my best find so far are the public domain medals shown at File:Gold medal-2008OB.svg - Wikimedia Commons and which come in several color combinations.

For friendship, perhaps one of these hearts.

For optimism, a public domain flower-based icon, perhaps this one with the colors changed for contrast.

For "funny", an edit of this comedy mask icon.

The staff have a general policy of not adding ratings that are solely intended to leave negative feedback on other members' input. The "Angry" and "Sad" ratings came with the software change, but they can be used to rate, say, a news piece perceived to be frustrating or sad, in which case they can be used without giving negative feedback on the specific input (e.g., an opinion) of another member.

Then users will use the laughing emoji.

Then users will use the laughing emoji.

Using it in a negative or disparaging manner is a violation of Rule 9:

Is it also a violation to similarly respond to a post with a laughing gif or meme?

If the response consists of nothing but the GIF or meme, it could be a violation, depending on context. Report such posts if you encounter them and believe they may violate the rules.

Also, please use Site Feedback for questions about the rules, as this thread is focused on finding new icons for the ratings.

I will probably want to lighten up the optimistic icons soon. (Edited to add: Done) For now, take a look at these, please.

How about a "disagree", or, " thumbs down"?

We won't have negative ratings, as a matter of policy. The same thing I said earlier applies:

The staff have a general policy of not adding ratings that are solely intended to leave negative feedback on other members' input. The "Angry" and "Sad" ratings came with the software change, but they can be used to rate, say, a news piece perceived to be frustrating or sad, in which case they can be used without giving negative feedback on the specific input (e.g., an opinion) of another member.

I have just now realized that some of the desired icons correspond fairly closely to certain Unicode emoticons.

But those depend a lot on implementation on browsers and other software, so it is just a curiosity for now.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the effort you've put into this.
My pleasure. I hope you send feedback if you feel like substituting or changing any of those proposals. It may be fairly easy or even very easy to make changes.

So, after looking at the icons, I think the framed ones are great, but I would replace the ones for "Winner," "Optimistic," and "Friendly" with these, respectively:

I also think a blank/transparent background would work best here, but if that proves to be too much of a hassle, a white one should still work well.

Edit: I also think this one would be more expressive as the "Funny" rating:

It would fit better if it had more of an orange tinge, though.
