Hi everybody!

Let me introduce myself.
I was born in former USSR in 60-s.
Moved to Canada 12 years ago. By the way, please forgive me if my English will be not perfect.
I was raised to respect feelings of religious people but after I learned about unpunished rapes of children by priests, I lost my respect to all religious organizations and their representatives.
I do have respect to individual theists. I understand that their believes are products of their environments and how difficult for a theist to become a non-theist.
Although, I consider religious propaganda by parents and representatives of organized religions quite dangerous to young minds.
So, I'm not going to sugarcoat my opinion.
I don't want to insult anybody personally. I just want to say what I think about religions openly and directly.
Thanks everyone who welcomed me here!

Hi Tony,

Welcome to Religious Forums!

I was raised to respect feelings of religious people but after I learned about unpunished rapes of children by priests, I lost my respect to all religious organizations and their representatives.
I can understand your reaction, and I expect that a lot of people think as you do. You might like to consider though, that there are bad Priests, bad policemen, bad politicians. We humans are very easily tempted to do things we shouldn't, and if some do, perhaps we should not judge them all because of some bad apples.

Well, I hope you enjoy being a member here, and I look forward to seeing your posts on the forum.

I do understand that there are good and bad people, good and bad professionals.

I think that the difference between priests and policemen is that even a "good" priest is a bad thing because he/she represents organized religion which promotes fantasy over reality, destroys people's self-esteem and blackmails people for money and power.

I don't think there are "good" Hell's Angels or members of mafia. Unless they are undercover policemen...

I know what you mean. The only trouble with us humans (and priests are, after all human) is that we are human.

Hi, Tony. Welcome to RF. When I read your post, I immediately thought of my dear friends from Baku in Azerbaijan. They came to the US a little over 16 years ago as political refugees. They were Orotodox Christians who fled Azerbaijan due to religious persecution by the Muslims there. My husband and I were their sponsors when they were relocated here. We became very close to them and have enjoyed their association every since. What struck me as so interesting is that their experience with religion was so totally opposite to yours. They were to thrilled to be able to actually worship God the way they had always wanted to -- for the first time in their lives. Azerbaijan was still a part of the USSR when they arrived here, and they had spent their entire lives under Communism. I can remember the woman (the family consisted of a man and wife, their son and the woman's parents) once saying to me, "I always knew there was a God. Do you know how I knew? The Communists always said there wasn't one. I always figured they were lying. After all, they lied about everything else."
