"High School Students Crowned America's First Lesbian Homecoming Couple"

"Two California high school students became one of the first lesbian couples crowned homecoming king and queen in the nation this weekend.

Rebeca Arellano, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, was made the school's first female homecoming king when her name was announced Friday at a pep rally.

Arellano's girlfriend, Haileigh Adams, who also attends Patrick Henry High School, was made homecoming queen at Saturday night's dance.

"We have a lot of support, but there are also a lot of people who are angry about it," she said. "Anonymous Patrick Henry students are saying they're embarrassed and that it's wrong for a girl to take the spot of king. But there's no other way for us to run as a couple. It's not really fair for us not to have the right to run as a couple."

The times, they have indeed changed.

Whats 'Homecoming king and queen'?

I'm asking because i want to understand what does this supposedly represent or mean.

It's a popularity contest like the awards given in this forum.

The one where they're crowned in the prom?

If so, is it more about the most popular (or whatever supposed criteria) boy and the most popular girl, or do they actually have to be a couple?

I'm asking again to understand really, since it seems vague to me what is this supposed to represent, and where the opposition or anger some have is coming from.

In other words, if this thing is supposed to be about the most popular boy and girl, i can understand why some people may oppose this (though 'oppose' is a strong word for this really), but if its about the most popular couple, i can't see where it would be coming from.

The most popular King is a girl and the most popular Queen is a girl.

I understand that this is the case here, i meant what its supposed to be about. The most popular boy and most popular girl, or the most popular couple in general?

Because it's not about the most popular couple, it's about the King and Queen. You crown the most popular guy, and the most popular young lady as your King and Queen. Sometimes these kids don't even hang out with each other, they're popular in their own right.

You people should be asking yourself another question, though. Why weren't there any guys worthy of being crowned King? It's really come to this...

More kids voted for the girl then any guy...Simple

If so, and especially the bolded part (that being a couple isn't actually a requirement, which means its almost totally about the most popular boy and girl specifically), i understand why some people don't like this (especially if they cared about this stuff).

It doesn't make any sense to crown a lesbian couple, if this is the case,

But if 'king' is supposed to be for the most popular boy, and 'queen' for the most popular girl, it shouldn't be up for voting in the first place to vote a girl king, or a boy queen. It doesn't make any sense in regards to its supposed purpose.

Of course it doesn't, but the school can't have a separate category for gay events. That's not fair to anyone, regardless of their prejudices. The idiots would ruin it, is basically what I'm trying to say.

Common sense should be nearing its final stages of life, though. So this issue won't even be brought up 10 years down the road.

Not sure if i'm actually following. What you're saying suggests that its a little about both then (them being a couple, or at least representing the idea of a couple or what have you, and being the most popular), since there is no reason to mention or think of a separate category for homosexual events if thats not what you meant.

If its simply about the most popular boy and the most popular girl and thats it, there shouldn't be any need for separate events. The most popular girl (gay or straight), and the most popular boy (also gay or straight) would be crowned and thats that.

King is a title, Queen is a title. They havent voted a boy Queen yet cause none have come out.
