High stakes as Supreme Court considers same-sex marriage case

I'm hopeful that the SCOTUS will decide that gay marriage be allowed and recognized in all states, but there are five justices that... well, do I even need to finish the sentence?

It's happening. I really don't see how this huge public boon of support can be ignored. There is no legitimate basis for it's rejection outside of opinionated disdain for things that are different or new...

Apart from constitutional protections and doing the right thing, another reason for legalizing same-sex marriage would be the avoidance of a legal catastrophe. Thoughts?

I can't believe our country is ignoring thousands of years of family law and throwing itself off a cliff.

Well it did that the first time it recognized married women has having rights independent of their husband, or prohibited the questionable practice of polygamy so celebrated within the Abrahamic traditions. I can hardly believe the catastrophe that has ensued.

What do you mean? Laws that have been unquestioned for centuries often are found to be unconstitutional with changing social norms. Just think about sodomy laws.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that pretty soon all consenting adults will be able to marry whomever they want to.
I agree. I think that it is cruel to say that either you marry someone you are not attracted to or you can't marry anyone at all.

Well, my POV is that my niece/nephew is currently transgendering. She was born female but trust me, this person was decidedly in the wrong body. He is a man and always has been. Currently, he is getting married this September, hence my coming down that way. And being bi myself, and seeing the repetitive patterns in my family, I know this is at least partly genetic. It's time to recognize that all people have the right to marry whomever they love. Had it been the case 16 years ago, my beloved would be alive today. I hope and pray they will make the rightchoices and give rights to ALL people, as they should.

Some days I hate this bloody iPad!

Couldn't agree more.

Amen leibowde. I had a marriage, arranged, to my 'husband' who spent five years putting me in the hospital. And the only person I ever truly loved had to die because I could not get her on my insurance. I will refrain from remarking on that but I would bet you could guess my expletives. And remember, I was a sailor.

You should be a spokesperson for the movement. Tough to argue with your story.

And, I'm terribly sorry that you had to go through that.

If gay people can legally marry, what's next? Babe Ruth playing for the Red Sox? Mitt Romney inventing Obamacare? Oh, wait, both of those are true. Carry on.
