Hills to die on.

Noun. hill to die on (plural hills to die on) (idiomatic) An issue to pursue with wholehearted conviction and/or single-minded focus, with little or no regard to the cost.

I notice here on RF many of us have our hill we will die on when it comes to belief.

I will die on the “government is bad” hill.

When it comes to religion, agnosticism, and atheism, I do not have a particular hill I would die on.

I wonder, what is your hill?

I know the Christianity I was raised in, they taught that we were to die on the Christian hill, literally if need be.

I don't have any religious convictions that I would consider "a hill to die on" as far as I know. I'm not even sure what that might look like.

I do know that when I was in high school, we had a literal hill to die on Bull Valley Road just outside of McHenry, IL. It was a winding and hilly road, the kind at the right speed you would feel weightlessness and even get airborne as you drove over the hills. The speed limit was 35mph, but 50mph+ was where the fun began. I remember getting a ticket for doing 49mph in a 35mph at night bringing a girl home, and that I lost a classmate to that road.

One of the Buddhist precepts is to abstain from taking life. Do you mean something like that?

It would be difficult for me to pursue an issue or belief if I were dead...
Your last sentence confuses me, can you elaborate?

But yes. We can turn this specific scenario into a literal one quite nicely actually! Suppose you were on a hill. And someone was coming up the hill to delete you. Would you die on the hill, holding on to your precept of abstaining to take life?

Well, if I die on a hill I can't do any pursuing!
Non-literally - I would want to weigh up costs, because maybe my pursuit would lead to more harm than good without such consideration.

Speaking of which.... I'm a proponent of non-violence, not pacifism. So I wouldn't be accepting of "deletion."

I don't really have a hill to die on but i do have a hill to be dead on. The village graveyard is part way up the hill of the valley side. It's a great view over the village and across the valley.

From my niche in the wall, reserved for those who get burnt (cremated) I'll have the view i adore for the rest of my death.

There was a road north of Southampton in Hampshire, called the Winchester Bypass. It had one of those long gradual bends that just kept turning for ever. My best mate lost his life there, aged 18. Driving fast was his only vice (didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, didn’t do drugs, unlike the rest of us).

The singular thing I ever did that had serious
repercussions was my response to government's
attempt to draft me into the army back in the 70s.
Rules against civil disobedience prevent me from
saying more. But I can say...
**** government!
Congress can go take a flying **** at a rolling donut.
This is a hill to live on.

I don't think I would die on any religious hill. As for politics, I don't know if I would say "government is bad" in every instance, although I would stand firm on notions such as "power corrupts" and "they're in business to make money." One might think that such notions would be self-evident and that there wouldn't be much challenge that would require anyone to dig in and "die" on that hill, in a manner of speaking. However, there are those who believe that certain governments, businesses, and/or political factions should be considered above reproach - which is their hill to die on.

Follow the evidence. In case of insufficient evidence, delay judgement.
