Hindu Summer Camps/Hindu Youth or Adult Retreats/Hindu Camps

Namaste,

This thread was inspired by a similar thread in the
BuddhismDIR, although the premise is different.

Are there any Hindu Summer Camps in the States
that are worth mentioning or those that are maybe
very interesting for interested youths or adults*?

For example: Indian Summer | PBS Online Film Festival 2013 | PBS | PBS.

Programs or retreats** like that^?
_____________
* I'm in my early 20s; are there any for Hindus in
the 20-28 age range?
(sorry, V) :D

** Not to be confused with interfaith, syncretist-like
ashrams.

I've wondered this myself. The closest I have been able to find is a Sanskrit Language retreat in Wisconsin I believe. I know temples often sponsor Summer camps for children, but I haven't seen anything for adults unfortunately. If there were, I'd sign up in a heartbeat and I'm 28 years old.

Thanks for your reply, Fireside.
I would also quickly sign up if there were
summer camps/retreats for Hindus of such
a particular age range.

There are adult retreats, but those are not
similar to Hindu summer camps aimed at
children wherein the concentration* is on
religion, dharma, theology, etc.. Instead,
the concentration is on something else.
As a Hindu in my early 20s, I still have a lot
to learn about Hinduism(s). And, I'm sure
many other Hindus of the 20-28 age range
have a lot to learn as well.
________________
* Like the PBS video I linked earlier; a
setting/environment like that is what I am
speaking about. Programs exactly like
that, but for Hindus of the age range
mentioned above.

Sri Venkateswara Temple in Pittsburgh used to have one, probably still do. Editted to add: I found this http://www.venkateswara.org/CLASSES/temp.sumcamp.htm for the SV temple in New Jersey. Looks good from here.

Also, some of the local Hindu Student's Associations of universities run camps of some sort, more on things like youth leadership. One could always start their own...

Wow thank you for posting the documentary!

Being a solitary white Hindu, I would find such an opportunity to be like heaven!

Aum Hari Aum!

Namaste, Andal:

I am happy that you found the
documentary interesting.

What I really enjoyed was how
the staff in the documentary
was diverse.

Oh! A glimmer of something!

I was scouring the web looking for ANYTHING that could resemble an Adult Education program for adult Hindus. Everything was either geared towards children or more of a Yoga, interfaith retreat thing. (Nothing wrong with that of ,course for those who are looking for that. There's plenty to choose from)

Then I stumbled on this. It's a temple in MD that offers Adult Hindu Education and discourses. I am considering contacting them. It is a bit of a drive for me, but it might be worth taking this small example and trying to search for it in other states in the US.

I am humbled by this finding, Fireside.
Humbled for remembering this thread,
and humbled for finding something in
Maryland, when I, a resident of the
state, was unable to come even close.

Hehe. :p Thanks!

I've been to that temple, and the Murugan one about 10 blocks away. Nice place, fairly large too. All the courses look interesting.

Lucky you! =) I am two hours north in PA, but I may make it into a mini-pilgrimage site. I looked further and they don't seem to list any upcoming programs on the website but I"m sure a call to the appropriate volunteer will answer questions.

Gah! Oh, fate , you are a cruel mistress.

I still get my former temple's newsletter.

In the latest edition they have announced they are offering religious classes for adults that coincide with the Balagokulam classes for kids.

I suppose there's a reason for everything. Maybe when I visit in September I can drop in on a few classes.
