There was a guy not far from where I Live, who used to go out each day dressed in the same clothes that had never had a wash, high as a kite (booze); he'd stand in the main town roundabout swearing and cussing at all the traffic - even waving a multi coloured umbrella threateningly at drivers.

When he died, they found a fortune in cash, under his mattress.:(

I heard Rumours (although i suspect it's more along the lines of Urban legend of a lady who would sit on a park bench with a baby (breast feeding when nessesary) collecting coins, after a bunch of hours a Caddillac pulled up she got in with the money and another women with a baby got out and sat in the same spot.

I remember my Mother telling me a true story about a well-to do family in London, Just before the war.

(Don't forget the fact that that was going on for 70 years ago).

Husband used to get up each day, dress in a suit & tie, put his bowler hat on before leaving home, briefcase and all. He went straight to Victoria railway station, Opened a 'left luggage' box (available for hire), took all the contents down to the gentlemen's toilets, changed from his suit into ordinary clothes, put his suit in rhe left luggage box, went outside the station, and began his daily task of being a pavement artist.

At the end of his working day, he would change back into the suit, and go home.

I can't remember the details of how myGrandfather found out, but that was the story. :D

One of my highschool teachers was saying how his grandmother, who lived through the depression, had hundreds of thousands of dollars stuffed under her bed mattress. Even though she was rich, she lived in a trailor that was in a trailor park. The teacher said that people who lived the the depression have a tendacy to not trust banks, and save every last cent they earn, incase the economy would crash again, and the banks would lose thier money.

And, in the case of my grandmother, kept everything she ever owned. That woman threw nothing away.

My Dad told me about a panhandler he used to pass every day on his way to work in New York City. One day, he watched a 60 Minutes special about panhandlers, and the guy on the show was the same guy my Dad had seen every day for a number of years. As it turned out, it was a charade: the guy wasn't homeless, he had a pretty nice place and a car, and paid for all of it with the money he made sitting and begging.
