Honest Answers to How are You?

Well... to say how you are, I suppose.

If you're great, say so. Not so great, say so. "I've seen better days" is one I use when I'm not well, or "same [insert preferred poop word here], different day" when things are somewhere in between.

If people want to know more, they'll ask. Most of the time, they don't, and they'll either say they're happy to hear that, or sorry to hear that, depending on the answer you give.

I have bronchitis and am under a lot of stress. I have work 6 hours each day M-F, meals on wheels to do, schoolwork, therapy each week, and I have to deal with my mental health which has been causing problems. Staff at the group home are mad at me cuz I don't do as much chores as I used to cuz of how exhausted I am when I get home. Sometimes im so exhausted I might refuse to do a task I usually do. I've had 2 meltdowns in the past month and multiple emotional flashbacks as well. And I've only had 5 days not sick since I've started working. I feel optimistic and upbeat but im stressed out tired and more irritable then usual.

My stomach was a bit upset because sometimes I immediately switch from coffee to soda and my stomach doesn't agree with that. But this morning I had an appointment with a new psych doctor that went well, and despite waking up at 7 AM I feel awake and alert. I'm probably going to eat a protein bar soon and I'm patiently waiting for more syrups for my SodaStream machine.

So yeah, overall I'm doing well. I feel fine.

Hi, thanks for asking. I have a rash so bad on my *** I can’t even sit down. So how are you?

Might want to get some cream for that.

Doesn't seem very understanding of the staff...

I’m one of those people who, when you ask them how they are, always say “I’m fine, thanks.”

I get that from my now 92 year old father. He’s now completely deaf, takes an hour to walk round the corner to the shops, has to inject himself with insulin twice a day, has prostate cancer which is developing so slow there’s no point him being treated for it; and if you ask him how he is, will say, “I’m fine thanks.”

I know that in the modern world men are encouraged to be open and honest about their feelings; but that’s not the culture I come from. And I’m fine with that, thanks.

I've been dealing with stress. I hope you feel better soon.

I've been feeling quite stressed as well. We're understaffed at work and I'm basically covering three people's jobs. Also under a lot of scrutiny from my supervisor.

Im also worried i won't be able to handle living on my own

Don't let it bother you. Living in a group home is much different from living on one's own. For one thing, there's less people, so less work. For another, you don't have to keep the rigid routine that group home staff are expected to maintain. If you don't feel like doing something because you're exhausted, you can find a better schedule that works for you, or do certain chores less often.

The smoke from the fires up north is playing merry hell on my sinuses. Felt like I've had a cold all week. Making my husband cough too which is upsetting because he's asthmatic and very prone to bronchial pneumonia. Hoping the rains come soon, so I can return to my normal activity levels. Hard to be active when the air quality is so bad.

What are some honest answers to how are you?
Sometimes I say "fine", but that's when I mean it.

English people who are not entirely fine, whether in body or in spirit, will often say something more guarded, like "mustn't grumble", or "not too bad, thanks", or "soldiering on", or "struggling by", usually accompanied by a laugh or smile to show it is meant light-heartedly nevertheless.
