President Donald Trump is expected to propose an initial $5.9bn (£4.56bn). Texas authorities say the state might need more than $125bn.

At least 39 people have died in the storm and its aftermath. East of Houston, floodwaters are still rising.

Visiting Texas, Vice-President Mike Pence promised federal help to "rebuild bigger and better than ever before".

The White House also said Mr Trump would donate $1m of his own money to the relief effort.

I am a pretty vocal opponent to many of the presidents current initiatives. But I am happy to see him take a step to help, personally. While I did his rally style visit to Texas strange, credit where credit is due.

When they are saying the Hurricane caused over 100 billion in damages, what's 5.9 billion, who's going to come up with the other 94.1 billion dollars????

And Trump's personal donation of 1 million, what an insult coming from a billionaire, 1 million is one of his gilded chairs in his NYC apartment!!

Would you prefer they do nothing? Also note, the 5.9 billion is the initial investment. I am certain they will apply for more as more concrete needs become apparent.

I hadn't heard he donated $1,000,000.
What a criminal !

Sandra Bullock donated a million and was hailed as a hero. When the president does it, however...

Sandra Bullock is not a billionaire, and no where near as wealthy as Trump.

He only did it for the tax break.
Taxes don't work the way people often think.
If he has a 40% marginal tax rate, then donating $1,000,000 will cost him
$600,000 in after-tax money. So his doing it solely for a "tax break" makes
no sense because the $400,000 benefit cost him far more than that.
He did it either for PR or out of charity....or for both.

Ref.....

Yes, since we place too much emphasis on the importance of money.
I would disagree. If I am the victim of a natural disaster and I am reliant on financial donations, the reason behind it is not as important as having what I need to live/rebuild.

I am struggling to understand why you think Trump making a donation is a bad thing.

Lets put it this way, its like the equivalent of me donating 25c to the relief effort, should I be applauded for that???

Of course! Any form of charity should be celebrated. I am concerned that your overwhelming negative bias is overshadowing the fact that the donation will help. It will go into the pot that can help bring positive change. Why is this so difficult for you to acknowledge?

Because if a man as rich as Trump really cared he would be donating tens of millions of dollars, not just 1 million, it shows what a cheapskate he is, IMHO.

But you just know that it won't be 'his' money; it'll be in some trust or charitable fund that gets money from elsewhere.
Where the money originally came from or the political motives behind it are irrelevant. I just applaud charity and this is one of those cases.
