How do you be a Christian when the Bible is so faulty?

I am of the opinion that Jesus was perhaps really god. There may be truth in Christianity. But the Bible is full of so many contradictions and mistakes that it puts me off. How can I become a Christian when the Bible is so full of imperfections?

Not the OP, but:

If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. What does the Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’…. It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin…. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law

I was born as a Christian and when I had to choose myself "God put something on my way that was exactly like I felt my whole life". Lucky me.

I believe in Jesus, and could decide to follow Jesus as my Master. Just stick to the "first and second commandment" + "judge not". Plenty for me. I rather forget all the others. Just to complicated language. I prefer simple. But it would be trouble going to a church. I tried last 4 years. Just does not feel good.

And then I would nag Jesus until He personally explains to me how the Bible originally was given. That is the connection I want anyway. I used to read a lot. But now I only want to experience myself. 1 on 1 connection with Jesus or any other messenger of God.

Most important that you follow your heart. If you love Jesus, I believe He will show you the way. Just nag Him until He tells you.

Good luck finding your way

Many Christians do not take genesis literally although clearly many do.

Jesus spoke of His return during the Olivet discourse. The language used is open to interpretation as evidenced by a wide variety of perspectives.

Christianity is a relationship with jesus not the bible. Develop your own relationship with god. You can use the bible as a guide. Every sacred scripture has some contradiction. The bible wasnt written by god, just people who were inspired by him.

I feel you dont need the bible to know jesus. Others are dependent on it. Depends on where your preference to find your spirituality: from the source or from people who write about it (first hand or second hand experiences)

My opinion is Jesus preaches that all are to be served on the basis that God is in all, with no one superior to another. A lot of different groups have picked up on this over the centuries for example: the Rastafarians with their I and I. I think is this why Romans 16:16 tells some people to greet one another with a holy kiss. The presence of God makes them holy.

There may be truth in Christianity.
Here is how I understand this: I think it is for the purpose of transforming people and moving us towards peace and love. As you become more peaceful, loving, hard working you become more real, more true. You deny yourself to be filled with truth. The you that you were is no more and in its place is christ. Oppositely as you move towards selfishness, works of the flesh you become less real, less true. Its on the basis that whatever you do in Christ is permanent, but whatever you do on your own is temporal. So you have in the gospels statements like "I am the resurrection and the life..." and statements by Paul like "I have been crucified with Christ nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lives in me."

But the Bible is full of so many contradictions and mistakes that it puts me off. How can I become a Christian when the Bible is so full of imperfections?
The Bible is a library with many writers, so it is a non issue. Why believe those who say otherwise, who say there are no contradictions? I no longer do.

So if you see so many contradictions and mistakes why would you want to become a Christian?
Suppose that you want to spend your life in service to others and need a supportive community to help you do it?

The contradiction is in whether "works" can make one righteous or not. Not even Paul seems to be able to keep that one straight.

Works for god are unrighteous, works for self is.

Where is the contradiction on whether works making us righteous. All throughout the bible, works has always been for and obedience to god. Where does it say Paul promoted righteous (self oriented) works and not for nor dictated from god?

Most "Christians" follow the teachings of Paul and not Jesus. When in doubt go back and review the two commandments Jesus gave his disciples. This will put you on a better path.

While I'm not especially familiar with various traditions of Christianity, back in my college days I participated in a progressive Christian group on and off. One of the things I learned from that experience is that Christianity takes many forms, and not all of them hinge upon the Bible. That was reinforced by some religion courses I took as well, along with some other things I've run across since then.

I take the perspective that any and all works of writing are precisely that - they can be sources of inspiration a person can take or leave as they will. I think some of the trouble for Christianity comes from certain traditions taking these texts literally or placing a lot of importance on them. But you don't have to do that to be Christian, from what I understand.

For me, the Bible isn't Christianity. The Gospel is. I was orthodox for decades until I saw this. When you remove the influences that the Jews followed, the Gospel stands out on it's own without flaw. The difference between a perfect message intertwined with imperfection. When you see the Gospels of Luke, John, Mary, Philip, Thomas, Matthew, Mark, Truth all come together as one message, the rest is exposed as "before the Spirit (capital S) was given to man as the true teacher (of spirit). It's not hard when one see's beyond the forest.

Gospel of Thomas:
(2) Jesus said, "Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over the All."
(3) Jesus said, "If those who lead you say to you, 'See, the kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty and it is you who are that poverty."

Christianity is a path, not a religion.
