Do you feel large corporations are evil, greedy, and corrupt? Do you feel they push Mom and Pop shops out of business? Are they good for America/Whatever Country?

Poll is coming.

When I first read the topic, I was thinking more along the lines of Dupont, and Exxon. In which case my answer is they are greedy and corrupt. But you used Wal-Mart. And well, for a long time Sears and Roebucks was the only place to get stuff, so that hasn't really changed much.

Why do you want to dump them all into the same basket. Instead of slandering them all, why don't you judge each one individually.

Wal-mart isn't exactly the pillar of morality...
Did you know that you used to be able to buy cocaine and vibraters through the old S&R catalog. I have cracked up looking at some of the first Sears&Roebucks.

You can buy vibrators at WalMart too. They're just called electric toothbrushes. :D

NetDoc is right, you have to judge them individually. Even then, it's tricky.....lots of good, honest people work for very unpopular corporations.

I know, I was making a comment in rebutle to the comment of Walmart being the pillar of morality. This sears catalog was from the 1800's. Did you know that women used to go to the doctor to get orgasms, it was a medical procedure for depression or something like that.:biglaugh:

Seriously? That sounds like a lame plot line for an adult video! :biglaugh:

Corporations are evil...the sad thing is the US is so used to them that i can't imagine a way of getting rid of them w/o costing millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs...

NetDoc and Spinks probably have a point, it is unfair to lump them all under one banner. In saying that, the lobby groups that fight regulatory legislation tooth and nail for the corporations actively subvert democracy and fight viciously against freedoms for everyone else, including their own workers.

BTW, I have a family member who happens to work for one of the worst offenders worldwide (Nestle). Isn't this life funny?

That's where the term hysteria comes from.

Walmart is evil. I've dealt with them when I dispatched for a freight company. They feel that federal regulations don't apply to them, and they do whatever they want because the rest of us are peons and have to take it. Walmart sucks!

I don't think a business is evil simply because of it's structure and tax status. Many small businesses and even individuals are corporations. The stereotypical corporation with thousands of employees and billions of dollars in revenue can easily become detatched from the people that it's decisions affect. What seems like the right thing to do financially is not always the right thing to do for the average joe. Where does the responsibility lie? The corporation is responsible to its shareholders. Is the shareholder less deserving than the guy who sweeps the parking lot? In many corporations, the guy who sweeps the parking lot is a shareholder.

WALMART IS STILL EVIL!! :149:

I think large corporations are good for the most part. They are able to save the consumer money by providing services and products at a lower cost than the most small mom and pop places. They typically are able to more effectively control their overhead and put products into the market that the smaller shops can not. They are also able to spend a large amount of money on research and development to produce new products that are more effecient, cost less to produce and cost less to use, which saves people time, money and rescources. Many companies use R&D with the hopes of saving money and in fact, end up doing a better job of controlling waste and helping keep our environments clean. Now, don't jump all over me here Druidus, because I am not saying that all corporations have the environment in mind and are trying to save it. I just mean that in their attempt to control cost and produce products more efficiently, they end up reducing waste which directly effects the environment. A perfect example of this would be McDonalds switching from styrofoam containers to recycled paper containers. They were actually able to save money in the production cost and elliminate non-biodegradable styrofoam from our environment. This is a simple exampleof course, but there are others. Also, more money is spent on enviromental research by corporations than by the U.S Governement. A little known fact. The only thing that I don't like about some large corporations is how some of them are controlled by unions, but I will save that for another thread.:)

I voted for 'something else' - As long as there is an anti monopolies stance in legislation, corporations do not have to be bad. I think it was NetDoc who said "Don't tar all with the same brush"; large corporations can be more effective because of the 'economies of scale'. They are also probably best placed to deal with 'fair trade'. I remember being told about one British company retailing Jeans at $80, when they had left Pakistan valued at $2.

Like everything in life, there's good as well as bad.:)

I think the people that work for corperations are good and they are just doing it because they need a job but the people that run it are just blood suckers go mom and pop
