How do you know when you got a phobia?

Hi all.

Basically I had a rather strong emotional reaction to something that I shouldnt have. If you want more details check out this thread.

I would like to know if what I describe is a phobia of some sort? If so, what is the best way to confront it?

I have done dishes before without these problems, but then only at home at a much smaller scale (and I didnt like it then either, just didnt get this kind of reaction).

Take care,
Kerr.

I found this:

From Phobias and Fears: Symptoms, Treatment, and Self-Help

Normal fear
Feeling anxious when flying through turbulence or taking off during a storm
Experiencing butterflies when peering down from the top of a skyscraper or climbing a tall ladder
Getting nervous when you see a pit bull or a Rottweiler
Feeling a little queasy when getting a shot or when your blood is being drawn

Phobia
Not going to your best friend’s island wedding because you’d have to fly there
Turning down a great job because it’s on the 10th floor of the office building
Steering clear of the park because you might see a dog
Avoiding necessary medical treatments or doctor’s checkups because you’re terrified of needles

Physical signs and symptoms of a phobia
Difficulty breathing
Racing or pounding heart
Chest pain or tightness
Trembling or shaking
Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
A churning stomach
Hot or cold flashes; tingling sensations
Sweating
Emotional signs and symptoms of a phobia
Feeling of overwhelming anxiety or panic
Feeling an intense need to escape
Feeling “unreal” or detached from yourself
Fear of losing control or going crazy
Feeling like you’re going to die or pass out
Knowing that you’re overreacting, but feeling powerless to control your fear

Do you know if you have any degree of OCD, or have you not been checked?

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT).

When an irrational fear (we all have them) impacts negatively on your life (in your opinion): a phobia.

I'm going to see a therapist soon for my phobia.

Thanks. I am not sure if it was a phobia or if I was just overwhelmed by all the small things I have a problem with. There was a lot of them (dishes, dirt, the smell, etc). On that list I think I had about 4 symptoms, bordering to 5 (I had to stop at times to take deep breaths, but it was more related to my anxiety then problems breathing).

I think I have tendencies towards OCD, but I have never investigated the matter.

May be a mild/moderate mild phobia then.

I have OCD; ask your doc next time you go see him/her. Better to know than not. :)

I have a phobia of being spied upon. Most of the time it doesn't bother me too much but there are times when it does bother me.

I would suggest you go get some therapy if it starts taking over your life bro. It takes a strong mind to beat this stuff on your own. I have a phobia of spiders, tight places, old silverware, heights. Its nothing too serious though.

Might investigate possible autism.Of course highly functioning.Unless you have a BUNCH of phobias ..You describe something closer to autism.

How do you know when you got a phobia?

By my irrational response every time, not being able to push back. Getting very physical reactions 100% of the time, increased heart rate, itchy, not being able to focus and panic.

Mine is visual, there is no way I can look at my phobia.

Immersion therapy is the only way I know you can get over it, basically you face your fears. I wish there was an easier way!
