How long can you hold your breath

Mock Turtle

Oh my, did I say that!

I used to practice swimming underwater when young - in the local swimming baths - and could manage two minutes OK as to holding my breath, but I never went much further than this. On holidays, whilst snorkeling, this came in handy and I managed to swim down to see the bottom feeding creatures like rays. I also happened once to see a speedboat churning its way overhead and where my depth fortunately allowed me to be safe. Such a nice quiet bay I thought for such swimming.

I just stopped breathing for a minute and six seconds.

I'm not sure it was my breath, though. It wasn't in my body before I inhaled. My window is open and I think some of it might have left the room when I exhaled. I'm not inclined to track it down. The dracaena in my room or one of the plants outside can have it.

Some members of the Bajau Sea Nomads can hold their breath for 5 minutes or more (up to 10 minutes, according to some sources). Apparently a larger than average spleen for humans enables them to hold their breath for so long.
