Just how stupid would it be to bomb Iran? Why would it be stupid? Or, if you by chance think it would be smart, then why would it be smart?

Bombing Iran has the potential to be stupid, indirectly, in terms of fueling extremism. It probably wouldn't have much of a negative effect on the United States.

Invading Iran would have a very negative effect on the United States. If the Americans think a few thousand soldiers killed in Iraq is hard to swallow, dare threaten the Iranian people on their own territory and see what you get. ;)

Ok. Mr. Well tainter.

I think it depends.
If Iran is not going to be a danger to anyone, it would be very stupid to bomb them. If Iran was planning on assembling a nuke to drop on Israel, I think it would be wise to bomb the nuke facilities.

The problem is figuring out what they are going to do before they do it because if we decide they are going to be peaceful and they nuke Israel, that will be very bad because Israel would nuke them back and that would automatically start WWIII with nukes.

The other mistake is less destructive but still very bad. If we determine that Iran is going to attack somebody with their nukes and take out the facilities before a bomb can be made, and it turns out that Iran really did only have peaceful intentions then we look like a horses rear end and we destroyed a country's energy source (not that they do not have a little oil to use as energy) but anyway, we would have violated their sovereignty with an act of war in a mistake.

The WWIII scenario is a lot worse for everybody. In that one, everyone gets nuked. In the second one, Iran has their Nuclear program set back to zero. Of course only history will bear out with was the correct decision.

If I were the president, I would look long and hard at Iran's capabilities and their intentions when their President has said that he wan't to wipe out Israel so many times. What reason does anyone have to not take Ahmadinizhad (sp?) at his word? I would not like the guilt of knowing I could have stopped WWIII and didn't...

Out of curiosity, why do you think Iran is so particularly tough? Didn't they fight Iraq for 8 years without gaining any ground at all? I would think they and Iraq were equally matched.

But is it even feasible to bomb Iran's nuclear capabilities back to zero? Can it even be done?

They're not necessarily tougher, they're just the Americans of the Middle East. They can't imagine anyone would ever think a country other than Iran is even worth living in, they know very little about the world around them, they're very proud, they're very united against outside threats. An American soldier crossing the border into Iran might as well be a Mexican soldier crossing the border into Texas.

Well, I've seen other post about Muslims not standing up to radical fundamentalist. If the U.S. citizens don't cry out and say this is enough then we aren't a nation for the people and by the people. We need to all sit down to table and try to understand each other.
I am sure we all know it is not as simple as that. But why can't it be?
Iran chose their goverment, the Iraqi's were under total dictatership and had no choice. But neither do innocent citzens in the market place when indescremenant bombs go off.

We can sit this one out. The problem still is going to be there though. Does anyone believe that by ignoring something will effect any change?

Perhaps you are comfortable with an unstable man bent on the destruction of the Jewish state of Israel. Perhaps you think he won't sell any terrorists a small nuclear device that could find it's way to our country and destroy a medium sized city.

George W. Bush is probably the most hated President to date, he truly believes what he is doing is correct. Is he perfect? Of course not. He does believe that he is looking out for our safety and to his credit, we have not been attacked since 911.

There has been a price for this protection and some say the price has been too large.

I truly hope that the Democratic Party does get elected. I have heard how much better they could do things and am really tired of hearing this. I am ready for them to shut up and put up.

If we stay out of this one, Israel will handle the problem anyway. Then we can all bad talk Israel. I guess they should stay out of this as well and have two holocausts in 100 years.

Or...... we could fly over their country and drop some bunker busters and solve the problem. Some say they would get even. They are right! But their going to attack us first chance they get no matter who is the President and what ever we do or not.

Does anyone believe they will just leave us alone if we do not bother them? We are the Great Satan remember? Do you think there is anything we can ever do to change that?

If you think I am full of it, why not go there for vacation next year then.

Yes. But the public opinion of the world would have a cow. We have had tactical nukes since the 60's. Now we also have bunker buster bombs capable of deep underground penetration.

Combine the two and you have something akin to an underground mini-nuke. This will work to take out the sites. There are some estimates that the program is spread out over 30 or more locations, most underground. It would take a large group of fighters or bombers but with the precision guidance systems of today, if we know where the target is, we can probably hit it.

As a side note. Israel could also do this job. The US sold Israel bunker busters last year or two years ago (I forget) for just this purpose. Israel has nuclear technology and their Air Force is actually better than ours so they can definitely do the job.

Personally, I think Israel is about to do the job. 1. They are the most threatened by the situtation. 2. They have shown that they will do it when they bombed Iraq's reactor (provided by the French and Chiraq) in the 1980's. 3. The United States has recently moved a second carrier into the gulf for no apparent reason but I think it is to provide refueling and logistical support for an Israeli air-strike on Iran if needed. (The Israeli fighters cannot make the trip without refueling). 4. AND THE BIGGIE. Israel is rumored to have just asked permission for a flight corridor over Iraq for just this purpose.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/02/24/wiran124.xml

"Israel is negotiating with the United States for permission to fly over Iraq as part of a plan to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.
To conduct surgical air strikes against Iran's nuclear programme, Israeli war planes would need to fly across Iraq. But to do so the Israeli military authorities in Tel Aviv need permission from the Pentagon."

We allow mexican to freely walk across our border into Texas every day. In fact, we give them health care, social security and credit cards when they get here. :D

When a country is attacked like the U.S. was by a spoiled rich kid who found his glory in the war with the Soviet Union and Afghanistan and was told his help wasn't needed by the royal Saudi family. He got his feelings hurt and decided to make his own war. He decided to make all U.S. citizens no matter where you find them an enemy. If you think a country like the United States will sit back and take that you wern't paying attention. Read Eccl. There is a time for everything.
I'll start a new thread. Is it inevitable?

People do what deep down inside motivates them---not what they say. So if the President does what he says but not what his hidden agenda directs him, he my seem to be stupid to those who are ignorant of his real intentions. It does not mean he is.

For example, the Presidents policies in Afghanistan and Iraq now seem like nightmare failures. They are exactly what the President wanted however. How else could he have succeeded in getting Muslims to blowing each other up? How else could he so masterly all but put Secular Humanism in its deathbed by showing that the concept of spreading democracy is dead in its tracks? We cannot even IMPOSE it on other people! His success in Afghanistan is that it shows the secular world that "democracy" can only degenerate into a narco-nation ruled mostly by war lords and witness to the resurgence of the Taliban!

As "the Leader of the (Christian) world," Bush is in direct conflict and competition with our fading secular ideals. He is expert at using them in a way that further discredits them. This turns people "back to Christ" and proves his success before "God." He is turning the once-secular world into a crusade against all the other religions. He is, by this process, tearing down civilization and moving us in the direction, deliberately, towards the End Times so he can see "The Return of Christ.”

President Bush and his policies are not stupid; they are brilliant. They are also lethal to the human race!

Reason, and reason again
I voted "So stupid only Bush and Cheney would do it," but that's a lie. I know plenty of other people who are itching for a fight.

However, in comparison to my views on the Iraq War (Very, very stupid), that is quite troublesome.

Let's see here; a country is developing nukes against the world's will while thumbing their noses at the world. The leader of Iran says Israel hasn't much longer to be on this earth. He has said repeatedly Israel will be wiped off the face of the planet.

Personally, when my enemies tell me they are going to kill me, I take them seriously.

yep.... kind of reminds me of another guy who told the world what he was going to do and nobody stopped him.... what was his name again?

Oh yeah, Hitler.

I am absolutely amazed that people do not take Iran serious. If Iran sets off a nuke in NYC, then everyone will freak out and say that the signs were everywhere and we didn't do anything.

What is everybody going to say if Iran nukes Jerusalem and half the Jews are vaporized?

Oops? sorry?

It's a damned if you do and damned if you don't. If we go in before an attack everyone will scream "imperialist!". But if we are attacked then everyone will say, "Why didn't the government do something?". And then there will be nuts who say Bush nuked NYC himself. LOL!

My wife and I were watching 24 the night the nuke was set off in L.A. on the show and warned her that if we did ever get nuked or Israel that I would be signing up the next day in the Marines. I don't care if I am 38.

its a bush cheney stupidity that most people couldnt perform...except neocons---

Why would it be stupid? WELLLLL:
Because our military forces are drained,
we would be asking for retalliation, MAD anyone?
Because Iran didnt do anything to us (whah?)...nope, didnt do a thing, and probably wont. Everything you see in the media is the PRECURSOR to get the public desensitized to the idea of invading Iran...the same thing happened with Iraq---you may remember a little thing called 9\11 (which had nothing to do with Iraq, but the people were geared for war after that---they would have been ok with invading Ottowa at that point.) So Cheneys "near death experience" the other day, just a precursor----saying IRAN is providing IED making materials---just false information, making you mad and wanting to "defend the troops".

another reason:

Nuclear Energy programs are SMART!!! The US and UN resolution that anything slightly resembling nuclear power, energy, or explosives is BAAAAAAAAAAD is full of crap. Nuclear energy is CLEANER, MORE EFFICIENT, and CHEAPER (if produced in quantity mind you). the UN is pushing an oil dependant world when nuclear energy is indeed the best way to go.

As long as we are bombing military facilities, I don't see why it would be stupid. It would be stupid to put troops on the ground.

I am convince by your simple and straightforward yet very compelling logic and now concur.

1. Bombing military facilities in response to Iranian military action in Iraq seems just, fair, and prudent.

2. Invading Iran would be disastrous, as the Iranian people themselves, are not a threat to the United States. We've learned this lesson in Iraq.

3. Showing Iran that we are not to be messed with and demonstrating strength is important, as strength and power are what these governments respect. They have no respect for diplomacy, political altruism, or turning the other cheek.
