How to Go to Sleep when excited?

What is your advice on how to go to sleep when excited? One time I woke up around 3 in the morning and couldn't get back to sleep from the excitement I had.

My son does that if he's manic...

Unfortunately, he gets violent in his excitement. I'd advise not doing that. :D

Sometimes he chews his fingernails and it puts him back to sleep. Maybe try that?

Sometimes I recite bits of things I know, and it helps me. Other times I try to pray, or focus on my breathing.

I find soothing music and reading to sometimes be helpful. If you can, try not to get yourself pumped up before certain hours. Unless of course you're going out for a good time. But things like not exercising, not listening to certain types of music, maybe even taking a relaxing bath etc. can help. Sleep well.

I have no advice, other than to say it's very common, and to reassure you you're not alone. As a kid, I would do the VERY counterproductive activity of staying awake before athletic competitions. I still do before travel. People get excited, people don't sleep from it.

This works for me.

Get out of bed, watch TV, read a book, logon to RF ... after a while I find I'm not concentrating on what I'm doing and ready to go to sleep. Return to bed.

I usually have the radio on, expecting to listen to about two hours of comedy items (Radio Four Extra here in the UK), but am most likely to fall asleep after the first half hour. And much the same often happens when a late night science programme is on.

I can only suggest ideas not guarantee results. First of all try to be in a room that is gradually getting cooler but make sure your body is snug and warm. Secondly do not drink anything that will make you need to urinate: coffee, tea. Do drink moderate amounts of water, but it will help if the water has electrolytes. Make a recording of yourself sleeping, so you will know if your breathing is getting interrupted. Check to see if you are getting cramps for any reason. If you are getting cramps then its probably a weakness in either the muscle or in the muscles that are near a nerve.

Sometimes when people drink alcohol their body experiences a sugar low in mid sleep. If this happens put some peanut butter onto a slice of bread, and eat it. It helps to provide energy. Its not a perfect solution. Don't drink before bed. Don't go to bed dehydrated, either; and alcohol dehydrates you.

When you get into bed, first lie on your side for a bit. Then lie on your back with your head on one or two pillows. Arms down by your sides or on your tummy. Turn your head to the side and upwards but resting, not stressed. Do everything you can to keep an open breathing pathway, because sometimes in sleep the tongue blocks the airway. (If this happens to you there are tongue exercises that will strengthen your tongue and help you not to wake up from it.)

If you are in bed and comfy and have thoughts that bother you, sigh. Whenever you want to stop thinking about something, breath in and sigh. Now do not move, but let your closed eyes move and your mind wander about wherever it wants to go, until you forget that you are in bed at all.

Finally, I know some people with restless minds which must be exercised in order to get their sleep. For you people get the best set of crossword puzzles you can find and start practicing before bed. This can be very effective, but the quality of the crossword puzzle matters.

Code:
My electrolyte formula which I ripped from someone else is:
Potassium 100-300mg
Calcium 25 mg (can be a lot more) use citrical because it dissolves
Magnesium 25-75 mg (use pure Epsom salt. Do not use too much, because more than this is a laxative)
153 mg baking soda (same thing they put into Smart Water)
300-400mg table salt (NaCl)
crush it all up and mix it into a powder. Put about 1/2 teaspoon per cup water. Less or more as you like.

I get up, make drink of hot chocolate, sometimes I'll turn tv on or read for a few minutes while i drink then go back to bed.

If that doesn't work I'll take a couple of herbal sleep aids.

Occasionally i get resigned to the fact I'll be awake for the rest of the night. But wind up dropping off about 5am. I rise at 5:30.

Disclaimer: This has worked for me, but I can't say whether it will work for others.

What I do is practice mindfulness and focus on the fact that at the present moment—the moment at which I'm awake and feeling excited—whatever I'm excited about is not happening and cannot happen until its specified time comes, which means that staying awake because of it is pointless, even if sometimes understandable. Often, I accompany this with meditation focused on something unrelated to the source of excitement, such as my breathing, current posture, etc.

Also, I echo the advice to not pick up your phone or any other devices. Don't even check whether you have new messages on your phone unless you absolutely have to. Just let your mind become detached from immediate or future distractions.
