How to tell why a thread was locked?

Perhaps I should do a bit more skimming on the forum. I don't intend to request that any thread is unlocked. I'd just like to know why some threads I've participated in have become locked, particularly in case I may have inadvertently contributed to it.

Two recent threads I've posted in have been locked. The first one, "Evidence," I did see an explanation for and it was also unlocked.

The other thread is "Does atheism lead to immoral behavior?" Granted, I can see why such a thread could be considered controversial and it does seem like it devolved into personal attacks partway through, so I'm not surprised that it was locked.

If it was a user being castigated, then I could understand keeping that a private matter, but this is a thread that I contributed to that's being punished. I just don't want to incidentally contribute to any further issues.

Unless a moderator posts a comment about why the post has been locked, you can assume that no information will be forthcoming in a public post, but you can usually find out in site feedback if it has something to do with any of your own posts. You can ask if it was something pertaining to your posts. Usually you'd get a warning if that were the case. Another thing you can ask in site feedback is whether they can make a public post about why it has been closed. Maybe a mod post would be good, and so you want to suggest it.

It is against rules, however, to make a public post asking about moderation. This could be anything from "Why was I moderated about ___" to "Why was that thread about __ or why was that thread by ___ closed?" It comes under rule 2. All of these questions can be made in site feedback.

Thank you, this answers my question completely.
