We have souls, but animals do not, even though I have heard that some breed of cats make good soul food if prepared just right! ;) J/K

I believe everything alive has a soul. To say that animals do not have a soul just because they aren't as intelligent as humans is to say that a genius has more of a soul than a mentally retarded person.

It's actually interesting to look into animal intelligence. For instance, one gorilla (I forget the name of the gorilla), scored 85 on a human IQ test (she was taught language; both English and ASL. She couldn't speak English, obviously, however). 85 is within standard deviation of a "normal" adult human.

I know this is not a debate, but I would like to hear your reasoning behind that statement.

Humans, Cats and Dogs have souls, but maybe not all animals have souls (I just don't know).
So you extend soulhood only to non-humans you are familiar with and probably have emotional attachments to? That makes little sense.

I think it comes down to what you define as "soul". Buddhism claims that nothing is eternal or permanent, including souls. On the other hand, Buddhism claims that all sentient beings (not sapient) have the potential for enlightenment. Thus dogs, cats, and all sentient life are equal in both regards; i.e. no eternal, permanently existing soul, but having the potential for awakening to the highest truth of life.

Namaste.

I would go further 'down the line' than that, Engyo, I would include anything that has the ability to grow, to evolve.:)

Every animal has a soul. Whether it be a fimiliar, a bird flying above giving an omen, or a soul learning an animal life with little or no human interaction.

After reflecting on this, I think either both humans and animals do have a soul or neither have a soul.

In other words I haven't made up my mind on the existence of souls but I do not think that their existence would vary amongst animals if they did exist.

Well I know many believe David Beckham to have an unnatural right-foot, are you the same? :p

Yes, humans have souls, and other animals have souls. Any being that has the ability to choose has a soul (by my definition). However, it is not clear to me that the soul is eternal, at least not as a distinct entity. I have no belief that I will exist as "me" after my death.
