Hush Up!

At some point shortly after 7am, I was woken to the sound of drums.

For a change, the obnoxious noise wasn't coming from my own house(indeed, all members of my household were asleep), nor another boisterous neighbor, but from a high school, over a mile and a half away. For some reason, they feel 7am is time for their marching band to practice.

If it was loud enough to wake me up from that distance, I can't imagine what its like to be the poor saps living across the street.

I understand most don't sleep in to the extent we do, but 7am seems much too early to run a marching band. Even for those that are awake and about, the BOOM BOOM BOOM! just seems to interfere with the attitude of morning. It seems more desirable to ease into the noise of the day, saving the noisier things for at least late morning(unless weather doesn't permit, but that's not the case here).

What do you think? Do you prefer quiet at certain times(be it morning or night)? How early is too early? How late is too late?

Hmmm, 7am is when the restrictions on noise levels are lifted in both France and the UK. I am guessing your state has a similar by law.

Personally I'm up and about at 5:30 and probably making my own noise but those that sleep in don't complain so i guess shouting different cats for breakfast goes unheard in the land of nod.

I fully agree!

I prefer quiet all the time and since I do not live in a neighborhood I have quiet all the time.
Once in a while on a weekend in the summer I can her the neighbor on the property adjacent to me having fun outdoors or mowing their humongous yard, but it is in the distance on a 5 acre lot.

All I hear now is the Easy Listening channel on the TV and the birds and squirrels chirping.
Later, around noon, when I feed and water the raccoons, I will hear them moving the bowls around all over the deck and and knocking the water bucket over.
I will also hear the cats scurrying around and meowing for food later, but most of them are asleep during the day.

I expect it had to be either before regular classes, or after. And they decided on before. Maybe the team needed the field after.

I'm a morning person and most days I'm up before 7 am but even if I'm awake, I hate noise in the mornings when I'm trying to become functional for the day.
A marching band at that time would drive me crazy!

I think the noise restrictions lift about the same time. I could understand running a weed whacker at 7am... but a marching band seems over the top.

It used to be part of the regular classes, but I see that's changed. As spacious as that place is, I'd think they could stick the band in another area.

Though, that school's never been known for having courteous and thoughtful staff. When I went, I suffered from bullying...by the teachers. My oldest son did virtual there for a year, was promptly ignored, all my requests for help for him were ignored, so I enrolled him in the alternative school this year, where he can actually get some help(and I feel he'll be safer).

I seems so to me too but... No law against it.

Maybe, if it becomes a regular music show, you could get a petition up and present it to the school. I am pretty sure you are not on your own in this.

How about night workers or late shift? It'll surely disturb those workers

I often awake from the noise outside half an hour before sunrise when the birds are starting to scream. But a marching band would be worse but not as bad as church bells or a muezzin.

We have church bells just across the square. All through the night they chime out the hour and at the half hour give a single clang

Just to ensure you are properly awake its repeated 2 minutes later.

Then at 4 minutes past 7 am (and 7 pm and noon) they go into full meltdown mode and ring out a peel of 159 clangs... Yes i counted.

You get used to it, i don't notice them now when inside the house.

We have church bells about two blocks away. If they run before 10am, I don't know it, because I've never heard them. They're not terribly loud, though; sometimes I walk out of the house to hear them. (They play a pretty tune.)

I sincerely feel terrible for the surrounding neighborhood. If you worked night shift and lived across the street or even several blocks from the school, I imagine you'd have some real problems. At a mile and a half away, I'll survive(I may buy ear plugs); its the surrounding homes I feel for.

My grandma lived in a small rural town that was founded on a factory being built there. They had a tornado siren that still blows at 7am, 12pm, 1pm, and 5pm, back from the days when the entire town worked there, reflecting it was time to get up, time for lunch, time to get back to work, and time to go home.

I may buy ear plugs

Go for silicon, mouldable ones as opposed to foam.

Having needed ear protection during our village 4 day party i can most definitely recommend them.

Or... Not recommended but works for me, try blu tak... But don't push it in to deep.
