Whenever some pesky poster pesters me with pretentious, pompous & prickly posts, I quote the great Albert Rosenfeld.....

Pardon, I know it isn't something to joke about. My best "prayer" is honestly to offer the following counsel. If it's serious, you might want to look into cyberstalking and cyberharassment laws. There is a federal law in place that can hold such people accountable in the United States. Unfortunately it only clearly applies to threats of physical harm, but it's better than nothing. There may be other avenues available. I haven't looked into it that much myself, but I know there are tools to combat it. ISP scramblers. Anti-spyware suites. Things like that. Something to think about.

It depends on the website. On a forum like this, all you have to do is search for topics by author. Easy as pie.
Presuming they don't know where you are in the "real" world, then sure, you can ignore them. If they're making threads of physical violence, than as you said yourself, that is the time to involve the authorities, not go on a vigilante justice spree that will land yourself in jail.
