You may ask what Silmarists are.

A Silmarist is someone who follows the religion of the Valar of middle earth. They come from the book the Silmarillion, which is a fictional work by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Why would anyone follow an obvious work of fiction?

This is a question I often get. You see, you can never truly know if religion is true or false. However, with Silmarism, you don't have that problem. Though middle earth is not real, in it's fictional world, the Valar are real. Thus, this is the only correct religion, because it's the only one which does not really exist.

The main purpose of not having a religion in the real world is so you don't hurt anyone in the real world. One of the most common types of war is based off religion. In this, any religious wars you fight will not harm other people. There is no need to force people to convert, because the only people who matter don't exist.

Also, you can get the values from this religion. "Each has their worth, and each contributes to the worth of others" is the main belief of Silmarism. This allows you to execute the benefits of religion, without many of the harms.

If anyone has any questions about Silmarism, ask me.

Heh

Welcome. As soon as I saw your thread title I thought " Omg, the Valar?" Frubal for you.

Personally I prefer religions that the adherents realize is fiction.
You might be surprised by how many abrahamists aren't that different.

Welcome Melosh

I have long adored the creation myth at the start of the Silmarillion, which envisioned creation as a symphony begun by Eru Illuvatar and the Ainur. Melkor, the fallen Satan figure, attempted to destroy the beauty of the divine music by bringing in discordant notes but these dissonances ended up being incorporated into the symphony so that it became even more wondrous than before.

I've always found this a beautiful touch :D What a nice religion, even if fictional, you have!

Also, JRR Tolkien was one of the greatest Catholic literary figures of the 20th century so this is a plus for me too ;)
