I don't know if I can call myself a Christian after reading this.

On the positive side they provided conclusive evidence that waterboarding produces false intelligence....

Joking aside, there are situations where no words can describe the sheer mongoosery of a given situation. Education really is powerful stuff.

Or maybe you have a better insight into the heart of Christianity than those maniacs.

And maybe if you believe in an invisible fairy god-father who keeps daily tabs on your doings and will reward you with eternal life or send to burn forever depending on your score - maybe it is NOT such a leap to witch burning. Civilized Europe did it 1,000 yrs before there WAS a Nigeria.:(

OTOH if you don't believe in supernatural anything - witches are obviously silly.:)

This is absolute madness. I am disgusted with what some people do in the name of Christ, and to children no less. I don't even know if I can call myself a Christian while atrocities of this magnitude are being performed in the world.

Discuss.

Whilst i'm not known for promoting christianity, what these people believe is not christianity, at least not as it was taught by christ, which is essentially what christianity is, right?

Would you refuse to call yourself a human just because of the bad things that other humans do?

I suppose on the negative side, this is what happens when people blindly spread religion without proper instruction. These people have obviously distorted christ's message, but don't let it put you off religious pride. This is not representative of christianity :)

Now now i dont think we can blame the xtian religion for this.

This would be a mixture of local superstitions and a self important wanker of a priest.

The parts in the bible about witchcraft, would have been inspired by local superstitions. It is a normal part of the human psyche to explain unexplained situations on supernatural, evil entities. Over the millenia the strange hermit type persons with strange habits and knowledge of herbs and poultices have been blamed for all sorts of ills.

This was going to happen anyway, it just so happens that the blamer happens to be xtian. I could find a number of modern day examples of this being done by non xtian people.

Joe as long as you follow the 10 commandments, namely the love thy neighbour, you shouldnt feel bad about your beliefs.

Sad to say, there are still billions of Christians that insist that you will burn in hellfire forever if you haven't been "saved", i.e. taken JC as your personal saviour.
I could personally introduce you to a hundred (or more) people that believe this way easily.

Denouncing your faith because of the atrocities of others?

I think you know as well as I do that, even though saying this is delicate and should not be said lightly, these people aren't Christians. They just have a church and read the Bible, probably adopting some of the teachings. Nevertheless, they hold on to outdated superstitions which cause them to jump to outlandish conclusions after something unpleasant happens.

Don't forget, not all who call Christ "Lord" actually know Christ. :D

i saw the video, religion is poison. amazing what indoctrination does to humans.

this whole burning witches crap is thanks to a couple verses in the old testament saying something like "dont allow sorcerers to live"

and in case someone is foolish enough to think that christianity is all love and peace. consider this. all throughout the old testament "hell" was defined as simply, end of life. then meek and humble jesus christ came a long and turned hell into a fiery lake of sulfur and eternal pain and suffering. just read revelations. non believers will be blessed with torture by giant flesh eating locusts on earth before being killed and sent to hell, the place of eternal torture.

how loving.

Oh, please. Jesus HARDLY EVER spoke of hell in the gospels. When he did, the word being used was actually the place outside of Jerusalem which was basically a trash dump.

You want to see the love in the gospels? Try separating Jesus the Sage from the Christ of myth.

Besides, do parents not have to be strict with their children when they misbehave? Is that not a sign of love? Or should we be allowed to do whatever we want without repercussion?

Listen, religion is not the cause of these childrens' plight; outdated superstition is. I think you're confusing the two. That is very easy to do.

Really?;)

Please demonstrate the objective distinction between religion and outdated superstition.

I believe I already have to you. Nevertheless, I shall repeat it.

Outdated superstition is defined as taking old mythologies and superstitions too literally, and applying them, such as witch-hunting.

A religion is an organized spiritual journey carried out by a large group.

You have the wrong order.

it is disgusting. and sad. cruelty and abuse are never answers for anything. they certainly won't help sick or troubled children.

i sometimes tell people that if my faith were based on Christians, and not on what i know about Christ, i wouldn't be one myself.

That happens when religion becomes political, and religious teachers take on the role of sheriff, mayor, judge, jury, etc.

Religious leaders are to teach and give advice. But they must NEVER become kings. Unfortunately, that happens a lot, and it gives religion a bad name.

Organized spiritual journeys help with a sense of community, identity, continuity, etc. Human beings are social by nature, and going to church (or applicable temple) to share a spiritual journey with a large group of people is not dissimilar to going to a convention to share a love of a certain franchise with a bunch of other fans. Having an organized spiritual journey also allows access to spiritual teachers who are very well-learned in these matters to help guide students; this is something I do not have because my spiritual journey is my own. (though Vedanta is looking pretty appealing.)

A religion is an organized spiritual journey carried out by a large group.

first, the bible says that wherever two or more are gathered in gods name, that is a church or congregation, so no large group is necessary to form or be considered a "religion"

second religion is superstition, and vice versa. when GOD COMMANDS "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" in exodus 22:18 how the heck can you not take that literally? its a fact. it is a command. GODS COMMAND. there is no interpreting around it.

by choosing to ignore this command, youre ignoring god himself. and ignoring the judao christian god pretty much excludes you from the judao or christian religion.

now, if you want to be part of this religion, you best go out and kill witches, and dont forget, "dont cook a young goat in its mothers milk" LOL
